Autism spectrum disorder-specific knowledge deficits contribute to current disparities in the timing and quality of autism spectrum disorder services throughout the United States and globally. This study conducted a systematic review of Western and International literature to examine measures used to assess autism spectrum disorder knowledge. This review identified 44 unique autism spectrum disorder knowledge measures across 67 studies conducted in 21 countries. Measures used in each study were evaluated in terms of psychometric strength. Of the 67 studies reviewed, only 7% were rated as using a measure with strong psychometric support compared to 45% that were rated as using a measure with no reported psychometric support. Additionally, we examined content overlap and subdomains of autism spectrum disorder knowledge assessed (e.g. etiology, symptoms) and cross-cultural adaptation procedures utilized in the field. Based on these findings, the need for a cross-culturally valid and psychometrically sound measure of autism spectrum disorder knowledge is discussed and recommendations for improving current assessment methods are presented, including suggestions for measure subdomains.
Rationale
The amphetamine derivative 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine(MDMA; ecstasy) is a widely abused drug, particularly in adolescent and young-adult populations. Although it was shown that MDMA-associated cues reinstate extinguished MDMA seeking in an animal relapse model, there is little information regarding the neural mechanisms underlying this behavior.
Objectives
Because the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) plays an important role in relapse to cocaine and methamphetamine seeking, we tested the effects of lidocaine inactivation of prelimbic(PL) and infralimbic (IL)subregions of mPFC on cue-induced relapse to MDMA seeking.
Methods
Rats were trained to respond for MDMA infusions (0.50 mg/kg/infusion, i.v.) paired with a discrete cue in daily 2-hr sessions. Responding was reinforced contingent on a modified fixed-ratio 5 schedule of reinforcement. Cue-induced reinstatement tests were conducted after responding was extinguished in the absence of MDMA and the conditioned cues. Prior to reinstatement tests, rats received bilateral microinjections of either lidocaine (100 µg/0.5 µl/side) or physiological saline (0.5 µl/side) delivered to either PL or IL mPFC.
Results
Microinjections of lidocaine into PL completely blocked reinstatement of MDMA-seeking behavior compared with saline microinjections into the same region. Lidocaine microinjections did not, however, have an effect on food-maintained responding, ruling out a nonspecific disruption of motor performance. Conversely, lidocaine inactivation of IL had no effect on reinstatement of MDMA seeking or food-maintained responding.
Conclusions
Our results provide direct support for PL activation in reinstatement of MDMA-seeking behavior. Moreover, akin to cocaine seeking, there appears to be differential involvement of PL and IL subregions in this behavior.
Recent research has provided evidence of a link between behavioral measures of social cognition (SC) and neural and genetic correlates. Differences in face processing and variations in the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene have been associated with SC deficits and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) traits. Much work has examined the qualitative differences between those with ASD and typically developing (TD) individuals, but very little has been done to quantify the natural variation in ASD-like traits in the typical population. The present study examines this variation in TD children using a multidimensional perspective involving behavior assessment, neural electroencephalogram (EEG) testing, and OXTR genotyping. Children completed a series of neurocognitive assessments, provided saliva samples for sequencing, and completed a face processing task while connected to an EEG. No clear pattern emerged for EEG covariates or genotypes for individual OXTR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). However, SNPs rs2254298 and rs53576 consistently interacted such that the AG/GG allele combination of these SNPs was associated with poorer performance on neurocognitive measures. These results suggest that neither SNP in isolation is risk-conferring, but rather that the combination of rs2254298(A/G) and rs53576(G/G) confers a deleterious effect on SC across several neurocognitive measures.
We examined the course of repetitive behavior and restricted interests (RBRI) in children with and without Down syndrome (DS) over a two-year time period. Forty-two typically-developing children and 43 persons with DS represented two mental age (MA) levels: “younger” 2–4 years; “older” 5–11 years. For typically developing younger children some aspects of RBRI increased from Time 1 to Time 2. In older children, these aspects remained stable or decreased over the two-year period. For participants with DS, RBRI remained stable or increased over time. Time 1 RBRI predicted Time 2 adaptive behavior (measured by the Vineland Scales) in typically developing children, whereas for participants with DS, Time 1 RBRI predicted poor adaptive outcome (Child Behavior Checklist) at Time 2. The results add to the body of literature examining the adaptive and maladaptive nature of repetitive behavior.
Pre-clinical studies of individual differences in addiction vulnerability have been increasing over recent years, but the amphetamine derivative 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA; ecstasy) has received relatively little attention in this regard. Previously, we reported large individual differences both in rats' initial behavioral response to experimenter-administered MDMA and their degree of behavioral sensitization to repeated administration. To determine whether these differences could predict subsequent patterns of MDMA-taking or -seeking behaviors we used the self-administration-extinction-reinstatement model to examine addiction-like behavior (i.e., escalation of MDMA self-administration and cue-induced reinstatement of MDMA seeking) in rats a priori characterized for either locomotor sensitization or tolerance to MDMA. Rats that developed tolerance to the locomotor-activating effects of MDMA had a significantly larger locomotor response to the first MDMA injection relative to rats that developed sensitization. Importantly, rats that developed tolerance subsequently displayed an escalation of MDMA self-administration over days, as well as clear cue-induced reinstatement of MDMA seeking following extinction. Conversely, rats that developed locomotor sensitization to MDMA subsequently maintained relatively stable levels of MDMA self-administration over days and showed no cue-induced reinstatement of MDMA seeking. These results show that differences in the level of psychomotor activation following acute and repeated MDMA administration can reliably predict two important addiction-like behaviors in rats, which may have implications in the prediction of compulsive MDMA use in humans.
The current systematic review examines the use of behavioral skills training (BST) to train teachers and other professionals to implement interventions with individuals ages birth to 21. A total of 20 studies from 18 articles were included in the review. The SCARF protocol was utilized to rate article quality/rigor and outcomes of studies. All studies included in the review showed positive outcomes, suggesting teachers and other professional staff can be effectively taught using BST to implement a variety of interventions with fidelity. Seven articles were found to have sufficient quality/rigor scores in their primary outcomes to allow for interpretation of findings with confidence. Additional high-quality studies are needed to examine the efficacy of BST to teach others to implement intervention to support skill development in individuals with disabilities. Implications for future research and intervention are discussed.
