Sustainable urban development is the result of a process and people participation is the key factor in the sustainable development and the process of design and implementation. In developing a dense urban area, the participations of stakeholders are very important in creating design solutions. One of the goals of sustainable urban landscapes is contribution to the development of healthy communities through the benefit of the economic, social and environmental values. The approach of sustainable urban landscape is especially needed in developing dense old city in Surabaya such as Kembang Jepun, which is facing many issues such as limited urban landscape elements. People participation in this study is accommodated by a focus group discussion involving architects, researchers, planners, local residents, media and government as well as students. By accommodating people participation, the design solutions will develop healthy communities and the equity of economic, social and, environmental aspects. The design highlights as follows: visually appealing and suitable design to the condition of the area, lot of open spaces for various activities for different group and promote social interaction, cost effective and easy to maintain. From this research, community involvement is a key factor in creating and developing urban dense area.
The objectives of this study is to find that sustainable is important part of the identity in the dimention of regionalism Architecture. By conducting a study of the relationship between sustainable architecture with identity dimensions of regionalism in architecture, will get a clarity that sustainability in architecture is an essential part to determine the identity of the architectural regionalism. In particular the identity of the architectural regionalism in Indonesia.
The understanding of the meaning of space differs among people with different background of culture. So does among the modern and traditional people. This research aims at understanding the meaning of space in the residence of Java Tondano People in Minahasa. To achieve this objective, three important elements of residence must be considered, which are; setting, activities, and values. Bottom up approach is taken to reveal the meaning. The method of data collection and analysis are through triangulation of literature review, field observation, and interview. Case study implemented on the residences that Jaton People built within the period of 1900-1950, which historically show the characteristics of Minahasa traditional house. The result of the analysis suggests that the space in the house of Java Tondano people is not only a place to have a family, but also an integrated part of the Java Tondano people to preserve the value of community, to build relation and to maintain the harmony with the surrounding community. Such meaning of space is motivated by the value of appropriateness, tradition, and goodwill.
To make a site become a place is the existential function of architecture. The definition of architecture as identification of place (Unwin, 2003), comes with a purpose that architecture is also a process to discover the essence, the meaning conceivably present in the given environment. In the case of Kampung Ketandan Surabaya, the architecture is produced by the community by preserving and revitalizing the character of the kampung, with regards to its history, its activities and its buildings. Balai Pertemuan Warga in the form of Pendhopo is one of many other community centers in the kampung. This paper investigates in what way architecture generates symbolic places. Descriptive criticism is used as a method to investigate the phenomenon by considering architecture as a way of art and finding the interrelationship between the elements in it. To grasp the context of Kampung Ketandan, a case study method is chosen because of its ability to explore and endow the holistic, yet meaningful aspects of a presence phenomenon happening in reallife. The results of the study revealed that place is a holistic phenomenon, determining an 'environmental character' and architecture is a symbol to identify it.
The aim of this study is to find an alternative design approach that can answer the challenges of global warming and universalization. By conducting a study on the possibility of vernacular architecture as one of the alternative design approaches, to obtain a design that is oriented to the locality but still receive the latest technology in order to obtain sustainable design. This study used a descriptive method with rhetoric as analysis techniques, to explain how the vernacular architecture can be used as a design approach that is significant at this time. This study is a library research so that the data used is the data in the form of paper documents and images obtained in the form of personal documentation and documentation done other researchers, as well as the writings of experts architecture. To support the analysis in order to get results, then use the interpretation of Paul Ricoeur's critical theory as a basis for analysis. The result of this research is an approach to the design of vernacular architecture as a method. It is expected that by using this approach can produce a design that can answer the above challenges and provide identity in its design, so that the values of the locality and the uniqueness of the design can be raised as a design force, hopefully.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
