Aim: This clinical study is to investigate the effect of fasting (Sawm) Ramadan on thecount of streptococcus mutans in plaque surrounding fixed orthodontic appliances.Materials and Methods: Fifteen patients with orthodontic appliances wereparticipated in this study. Plaque specimens were collected from those patients attwo occasions, during Rmadan fasting (Sawm) and after they break there fastingafter Ramadan. The plaque Streptococcus mutans number of colony-formingunits (CFU) was analyzed by using Dentocult SM Strip mutans test.Results: This study demonstrated highly significant difference in Streptococcusmutans (CFU) counts in plaque between the values obtained from fasting patientsduring Ramadan and when they are breaking the fast after Ramadan.Conclusions: during Ramadan fasting, persons change timing and types of their foodand beverages consuming as well as teeth cleaning habits. Therefore orthodontistshould be aware of their patients’ oral hygiene during Ramadan by promoting andmaintaining satisfactory teeth cleaning during fasting (Sawm) and Iftar hours.
This report describes treatment of a 20-year-old Iraqi male with sever maxillary and mandibular arch crowding, deep bite, anterior and posterior cross bite. The patient presented with chief complaint of irregularly placed anterior teeth and unaesthetic smile. After completing the levelling and alignment, surgical extraction of impacted left mandibular third molar was done. The mandibular anterior segment crowding was improved during the first postoperative week. The active treatment time was 11 month result in successfully alleviating the maxillary and mandibular arches crowding, correcting deep bite and cross bite without extraction of any sound erupted tooth. After treatment, all of the patient's chief complaints were relieved. Hawley retainers were placed after debonding and the patient instructed to wear them for the following two years.
Background: Normal occlusal features of primary dentition are crucial for normal development of the permanent dentition. Breastfeeding is an important factor for both general and dental health of children. Aim: The aim of the present study is to assess the impact of the breastfeeding duration on the prevalence of normal occlusal features of the primary dentition among preschool children in Baghdad. Materials and Methods: The sample was 630 Iraqi children (270- boys, 360 girls), aged 3-5 years selected from four kindergartens in Baghdad city. The study was carried out through questionnaire and clinical examination. Normal occlusal features were examined as the presence or absence of interincisive spaces (IS) and primate spaces (PS), terminal relationship of the primary second molar that classified as: Flush terminal (FT), mesial step (MS) and distal step (DS). The presence or absence of ideal incisor overbite was also recorded. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS (version 21). Chi square and z test were used in data analysis. Result:s A significant relation was present between the duration of breastfeeding and the presence of: primate and interincisive spaces, flush terminal plane, mesial terminal plane and ideal incisor overbite. Conclusion Breastfeeding duration has a positive impact on the development of normal occlusal features of the primary dentition. Efforts should be taken to enhance the knowledge of the community, especially the mothers, about this impact to encourage them to practice exclusive breastfeeding for more than 12 months.
