Objective: To examine the immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 and beta-catenin in pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in oral mucosal biopsies. Methods: In this comparative cross sectional study, 70 cases of each PEH and OSCC were taken from the patients of both genders and in all age groups. Study was conducted at Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Rawalpindi from Dec 2017 to March 2019. Statistical analysis was done with the help of SPSS Version 24.0. We used Chi-Squared test with p value of < 0.05 which was considered as statistically significant. Results: In the current study, 80 (57.1%) male and 60 (42.8%) female patients with the mean age of 51.69 ± 16.121 (mean ± SD) years were included. It was found that 6-25% Ki-67 labeling index was observed in all (70) PEH cases, which involved only basal layer of the epithelium. Whereas, Ki-67 labeling index was highly expressed in tumor of high grade malignancy than tumor of low grade malignancy. On the other hand, expression of membranous beta-catenin was higher in PEH and cytoplasmic beta-catenin expression was higher in OSCC. Conclusion : It is concluded that Ki-67 and beta-catenin showed significant expression in PEH and OSCC in oral mucosal biopsies especially those with intense inflammation or unoriented tissue, helping the clinicians to arrive at a final diagnosis before planning any surgical intervention.
Worldwide Oral carcinomas considerable problem. It is crucial to know the molecular incidences of molecular carcinogenesis, as it has a significant association with tobacco in Pakistani population. So, this study aimed to screen out the savage high risk of papilloma virus 16/18 and p16 in oral premalignant lesion and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Moreover, the p16 correlation between HPV and OPL and OSCC was also analyzed. Method: A total of 150 samples from the oral cavity were taken from the Hayatabad Medical complex (50 samples of OPL and 100 samples of OSCC).In this study we used immunohistochemistry to look for p16 in OPL and OSCC, and we used polymerase chain reaction to find HPV. SPSS 21 was used to input and evaluate the data. The relationship between HPVandp16withdifferentvariables was determined using Chi-square and Fisher exact tests. Results:For p16, 14% of 50 oral premalignant lesions were found positive and 86% were negative. Moreover, while screening for the OSCC, the 18 percent individuals were found positive for OSCC, while the remaining (82%) screened out negative. HPV was diagnosed in 6% of 50 OPL. The co-occurrence of HPV with p16 was found in all the 15 (100%) individual’s with a p value of 0.001. However, three of the 18 cases with p16 expression did not have HPV infection. Conclusion: The current research supports the use of p16 as a unique marker for human papilloma virus in oral squamous cell carcinomas. Furthermore, a chemical carcinogen like cigarettes is thought to be one of the main risk factors for p16 and HPV infection, as well as other things.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare two plate fixation and one plate along with arch bar in the treatment of parasymphsis, and to analyze the advantages and disadvantages over one another. Study Design: Randomized Clinical Trial. Setting: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Sardar Begam Dental College and Northwest General Hospital Peshawar. Period: Over a period of one year from June 2017 to August 2018. Material & Methods: 60 patients with parasymphysis fracture after diagnosis established on clinical and radiological examination were equally divided into two groups, 30 patients in each. Group (A) were treated with two miniplates, while Group (B) one miniplate along with arch bar under general anesthesia with proper antibiotics coverage in the pre- and post-operative period. Results: The infection rate 4 (13.3%) patients in Group B while 0 in Group A. No Loosening /fracture of screw or plate occur in any subject in group A at any follow up visit, while it occurred in 4 subjects in group B at 15 days follow up period. 9 patients in Group A and 6 in Group B presented with immediate post of paresthesia, which was reduced to 7 patients in group A and 6 in group B at 15 days follow up, and to 4 patients in Group A and 5 in Group B at 1 month follow up. Similarly, no subject had inferior border misalignment in group A at any follow up period while 3 subjects have immediate post -op inferior border discrepancy in group B and 6 subjects in the same group shows inferior border discrepancy at 15 days , but the overall result of this variable was also statistically non-significant. Conclusion: Isolated mandibular parasymphysis fracture can be treated with either two miniplates or one miniplate along with arch bar for 6 weeks. Both treatment protocol shows advantages and disadvantages with the aim of achieving the best treatment outcome for the patients.
Objective: This study aimed to explore the truthfulness of such assumptions and get a real picture of the phenomenon being studied. Methodology: It was qualitatively designed study as the social behaviors and attitudes of people can be explored more in detail via using qualitative measures. 30 Semi-structured one-to-one interviews were conducted from three basic stratums of social classes i.e. high incomed, middle incomed and low incomed classes. Thematic analysis was done to interpret the results, the interpretational skills of researchers and qualitative research data software MAXQDA 2020 was used. Results: The study clearly indicates that myths regarding COVID and its vaccination do exist among masses in Pakistan. However, their level of intensity and form varies among different social strata. Similarly, the reasons for getting vaccinated were greatly influenced by government policies and income pressures. The knowledge and information regarding vaccines in this digital era is still clouded amongst many doubts and misconceptions regardless of the socio-economic status and qualification.
