Critical thinking is an important thing in building learners' knowledge. Students who have these skills will be able to solve problems effectively. This study examines the effect of science teaching materials based on the 5E learning cycle integrated with local wisdom in terms of gender on students' critical thinking skills. This quasi-experimental research with a pre-test-post-test control group design was carried out at Madrasah Tsanawiyah. Purposive sampling was used to select the research sample, including an experiment and a control group of equal ability between male and female students. The data were analyzed using a t-test and N-gain test to determine the improvement of critical thinking skills in both groups. The results showed that this teaching material affected students' critical thinking skills by the results of the t-test. The difference in the improvement of students' critical thinking skills is significant based on the result of N-gain and categorized as high. Students become more critical in solving problems after study using 5E integrated by local wisdom. The result shows an impact of this teaching material on first to fourth indicators of critical thinking skills. The fifth indicator is not affected by this teaching material because of students' weakness in elaborate the solution. There were also significant differences in the improvement of male and female students' critical thinking skills. One of them is that male students have a quicker response and higher self-confidence than female students in solving the problems. Based on this result, we conclude that applying science teaching material with 5E integrated by local wisdom positively affects students' critical thinking skills.
This research aims to develop the interactive multimedia product based on green chemistry in the acid-base concept and to study the feasibility of the interactive multimedia. The Four D model was applied to the 4D model: define, design, develop and disseminate. The feasibility study of the interactive multimedia-based green chemistry showed that it had 83.33 % validity with highly valid criteria. The feasibility study of the student worksheet, the syllabus, the lesson plan, the scientific literacy, and creative thinking instruments was gained 82.50 %, 89.06 %, 87.96 %, 80.00 %, and 62.50 % respectively. In conclusion, the interactive multimedia product based on green chemistry in the acid-base concept was feasible to be applied in chemistry learning processes.
Creative thinking skills are considered to have a positive correlation with students’ academic achievement. Thus, they need to be developed through the learning process. To successfully develop these skills, an appropriate learning model is needed. This research aims to determine the improvement of the creative thinking skills of prospective teachers who learned using structured, guided, and open inquiries. This quasi-experimental research used an untreated control group design with pretest and posttest. A total sample of 118 students was selected and distributed into structured, guided, and open inquiry classes. The research instrument consisted of 18 creative thinking skill items applied to the pretest and posttest. The data analysis was performed using ANCOVA and LSD tests. The results show that the mean score of the open inquiry class was higher and significantly different compared to those of the other two classes. However, the mean scores of the two classes were not significantly different. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the open inquiry model led to a higher increase in creative thinking skills compared to those of the structured and guided inquiry models.
Concept mastery is an important ability that needs to be developed for students as a base of their higher-order thinking skills. However, this has not been well facilitated in the process of learning science in Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) due to the lack of teaching materials. This study aims to develop science teaching material based on SETS integrated inquiry to improve concepts mastery of student. This R&D research adapted the Dick and Carey model. The product was then used in science learning and tested for its feasibility on using students in one of the MTs in Mataram City, Indonesia, as subjects. The results show that teaching material have a goof feasibility, high category in practicality, and effective for improving student's mastery of concepts. In conclusion, learning using science teaching materials based on SETS-integrated inquiry was proven to improve students' mastery of concepts.
