The cost effective synthesis of electroactive polyaniline (PANI) while retaining its desirable properties is one of the most debatable and challenging tasks for researchers in the field. Herein, we report a cost effective inverse emulsion polymerization pathway for the synthesis of soluble and processable PANI salt by using diesel as a novel dispersion medium. Different reaction parameters and their effects on the properties and yield of polyaniline were optimized. The polymer exhibited a highly porous morphology and was found to be stable up to 417 °C. The PANI salt showed good solubility in common solvents, such as chloroform, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and in a 1:3 mixtures by volume of 2-propanol and toluene. The coating of the synthesized PANI salt on stainless steel has shown good corrosion resistant behavior in marine water by reducing the corrosion rate to 67.9% as compared to uncoated stainless steel.
Amongst the primary tumors of the liver, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common. It is also one of the most prevalent types of cancers in Asia. Mostly, HCC occurs on a background of chronic liver disease and liver cirrhosis; however, de novo HCCs can also arise in apparently normal looking livers on imaging. There are multiple risk factors for HCC, including hepatitis B and C infections, diabetes mellitus, alcohol, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Other common risk factors which are known to be involved in the pathogenesis of HCC are obesity, food contaminated with aflatoxin and hemochromatosis. Many of these factors are commonly found in this part of the world, hence the high burden of disease. Besides these, smoking and familial predisposition to HCC also seem to have an important role to play in its development. Majority of HCC are missed at an early stage despite the emphasis on adequate screening and surveillance strategies. Therefore, most of the time these tumors are diagnosed at a fairly advanced stage, when palliative treatment is the only therapeutic option left. Hence, prevention of HCC by controlling and minimizing the possible risk factors is the need of the hour.
In the present study, cuttlefish bones are used to prepare highly porous hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffolds via hydrothermal treatment at 200 °C.
In the current study, we evaluated the growth, biomass yield, ensiling, and nutritional characteristics of spring maize genotypes grown under the climatic conditions of Northern Pakistan. Six promising spring maize genotypes were grown under uniform standard agronomic conditions in 72 plots (8 m × 10 m), blocked within three replicate fields. Maize crops were harvested at targeted dry matter (DM) content (33 g/100 g DM). Data were collected on plant phonological characteristics and biomass yield, and then the harvested crop of each plot was chopped, and subsamples were ensiled in three replicate 1.5 L laboratory silos (n = 12/genotype). After 90 days of ensiling, subsamples were analyzed for fermentation quality, nutrient composition, Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) carbohydrate subfractions, digestible nutrients, metabolizable energy (ME), and in vitro dry matter digestibility (DMD). Results revealed large differences (p < 0.001) among maize genotypes in the yields (tons/ha) of DM (13.0 to 17.9), crude protein (CP; 0.83 to 1.24), and starch (4.16 to 6.67). Except for total carbohydrates (CHO) and NH3-N, the contents of all measured chemical components varied (p < 0.001) among the spring maize genotypes. Similarly, all reported CNCPS subfractions varied (p < 0.01) among the genotypes, except for the non-digestible (CC) subfraction. Among the genotypes, there were large variations in the contents (g/100 g DM) of CP (6.60 to 8.05), starch (32.0 to 37.3), non-fiber carbohydrates (40.3 to 43.8), in vitro DMD (61.5 to 67.9), total digestible nutrients (68.1 to 70.6), digestible energy (2.80 to 3.07 Mcal/kg), and metabolizable energy (2.28 to 2.44 Mcal/kg), with genotype QPM300 having the highest values and genotype Azam having the lowest values. It was concluded that QPM300 is the most suitable spring maize genotype for silage production in terms of yields and silage nutritional and fermentation quality under the environmental condition of Northern Pakistan.
The effect Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and small intestinal bacterial over growth (SIBO) in minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is not well understood. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of eradication of Hp infection and SIBO treatment on MHE in patients with cirrhosis. Patients with cirrhosis were enrolled and MHE was determined by psychometric tests and critical flicker frequency analysis. Hp infection and SIBO were assessed by urea breath and Hydrogen breath tests respectively in patients with cirrhosis and in healthy volunteers. Patients with Hp infection and SIBO were given appropriate treatment. At six weeks follow-up, presence of Hp infection, SIBO and MHE status was reassessed. Ninety patients with cirrhosis and equal number of healthy controls were included. 55 (61.1%) patients in the cirrhotic group were diagnosed to have underlying MHE. Among cirrhotic group, Hp infection was present in 28 with MHE (50.9%) vs. in 15 without MHE (42.8%) (p = 0.45). Similarly, SIBO was present in 17 (30.9%) vs. 11 (31.4%) (p = 0.95) in patients with and without MHE respectively. In comparison with healthy controls, patients with cirrhosis were more frequently harboring Hp and SIBO (47.7% vs. 17.7% (p < 0.001) and 31.1% vs. 4.4% (p < 0.001) respectively. On follow-up, all patients showed evidence of eradication of Hp and SIBO infection. Treatment of SIBO significantly improved the state of MHE in cirrhotics, however eradication of Hp infection did not improve MHE significantly. Additionally, patients with low Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score and belonging to Child class B had significantly better improvement in MHE. A large number of patients with cirrhosis had either active Hp infection or SIBO with or without MHE, compared to healthy controls. Treatment of SIBO significantly improved MHE in patients with cirrhosis, whereas eradication of Hp did not affect the outcome of MHE in these patients. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a frequent complication of chronic liver disease (CLD) 1. HE can be precipitated by various factors like gastrointestinal bleeding, sepsis, azotemia, drugs (e.g. sedatives, diuretics), electrolyte imbalance and constipation. The most relevant substance considered in the pathogenesis of HE is ammonia, although the exact mechanisms of its neurotoxic effects are still under study 2. A substantial number of patients with advanced CLD have minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), which is the earliest stage in the spectrum of HE. One study reported the occurrence of MHE to be as high as 50%in patients with CLD 3. MHE, by definition, has no obvious clinical manifestations and is characterized by neurocognitive impairment in attention, vigilance and integrative function 4. It develops in patients with significant liver function impairment or with porto-systemic shunting. The centralized cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) allows unlicensed users to share their local sensing observations with the fusion center (FC) for sensing the licensed user spectrum. Although collaboration leads to better sensing, malicious user (MU) participation in CSS results in performance degradation. The proposed technique is based on Kullback Leibler Divergence (KLD) algorithm for mitigating the MUs attack in CSS. The secondary users (SUs) inform FC about the primary user (PU) spectrum availability by sending received energy statistics. Unlike the previous KLD algorithm where the individual SU sensing information is utilized for measuring the KLD, in this work MUs are identified and separated based on the individual SU decision and the average sensing statistics received from all other users. The proposed KLD assigns lower weights to the sensing information of MUs, while the normal SUs information receives higher weights. The proposed method has been tested in the presence of always yes, always no, opposite, and random opposite MUs. Simulations confirm that the proposed KLD scheme has surpassed the existing soft combination schemes in estimating the PU activity.
