The present study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Theileria annulata in large ruminants in Southern Punjab (Pakistan). Blood samples were collected from 144 large ruminants, consisting of 105 cattle and 39 buffaloes, from six districts of Southern Punjab including Multan, Layyah, Muzaffar Garh, Bhakar, Bahawalnagar, and Vehari. Data on the characteristics of the animals and herds were collected through questionnaires. The age of animals (P = 0.02), presence of ticks on animals (P = 0.02), and presence of ticks on dogs associated with herds (P = 0.05) were among the major risk factors involved in the spread of tropical theileriosis in the study area. Two different parasite detection techniques, PCR amplification and screening of Giemsa-stained slides, were compared, and it was found that PCR amplification is a more sensitive tool (19% parasite detection) as compared to smear scanning (3% parasite detection) for the detection of T. annulata. Twenty eight out of 144 animals produced the 721-bp fragment specific for T. annulata from five out of six sampling districts. Different blood (hemoglobin, glucose) and serum (ALT, AST, LDH, cholesterol) parameters of calves and cattle were measured and compared between parasite-positive and parasite-negative samples to assess the effect of T. annulata on the blood and serological profile of infected animals.
This study was conducted to evaluate the strength and volume change characteristics of a sedimentary residual soil mixed with bentonite (S1) when treated with three different enzymes. In addition, three reference clays including bentonite, illite, and kaolinite were also treated with enzymes to study the effect on their strength characteristics. Soil samples prepared at the optimum moisture content (OMC) were sealed and cured for four months. After curing, reference clays were tested for unconfined compressive strength (UCS). For swell tests, the S1 soil samples were placed on porous stones, which were immersed in water to allow capillary soaking of the samples. S1 samples were allowed to dry at ambient temperature for shrinkage test until the rate of reduction in volume became negligible. On completion of swell tests, the samples were tested for UCS to determine the decrease in strength due to saturation. No increase in strength and decrease in volume change were observed for any of the enzymes and dosages. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed some dense packing of particles for treated samples, whereas X-ray diffraction (XRD) did not reveal any change; in fact, the pattern for untreated and treated soil samples were indistinguishable.
A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of cyclic or chronic heat stress (HS) on the incidence and severity of white striping (WS) and histopathological changes in breast muscle of broiler chickens. One hundred eighty 1-day-old male chickens were randomly assigned to three research groups: control (standard temperature throughout the experiment), cyclic HS (32 ºC between 0800 and 2000 h from day 21 until the end of the experiment), and chronic HS (32 ºC from day 21 onwards). Cyclic and chronic HS groups showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in body weight gain and feed intake and poor feed conversion ratio in grower, finisher, and overall period. Serum biochemical profile was not different among the groups except globulin and P which were significantly higher (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively), in cyclic and chronic HS groups. Overall, WS incidence was numerically higher in control birds followed by chronic HS and cyclic HS birds, respectively. The chronic HS group had a lower incidence of mild (score 1) and a higher incidence of severe (score 2) WS lesions compared to control and cyclic HS groups. Histopathological analysis revealed that broilers subjected to chronic HS showed increased severity of myodegenerative changes, perivenular CD3 + cell infiltration, and lipidosis compared to control group. However, control and cyclic HS groups were not different in terms of histopathological lesions. In conclusion, this study confirms that cyclic or chronic HS may adversely affect the growth performance and that chronic HS may increase the severity of WS in broiler chickens.
The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets as external confinement is becoming popular, especially in seismic areas, because of its ability to enhance the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete to perform as a sustainable symmetric structural member. Therefore, various researchers have worked out for the prediction of strength and strain models of FRP-confined concrete. This study presents the improved strain models for the FRP confined cylindrical concrete members. Different previously proposed models of axial strain of FRP-confined concrete were evaluated based on a large database of 678 specimens from previous experiments and an improved model was proposed using the general regression analysis technique. Furthermore, the proposed model was validated using the previous experimental work of FRP-wrapped concrete cylinders and their finite elements analysis (FEA) using the ABAQUS software. The accuracy of the proposed strain model was quite satisfactory in comparison with the previous experimental and FEA results of the present study. Moreover, the proposed empirical strain model was used for the parametric study to investigate the effect of different geometric and material parameters such as the compressive strength of unconfined concrete, diameter of the cylinder, elastic modulus and thickness of the FRP layers, on the axial strain of FRP-wrapped cylinders. A close agreement among the proposed strain models and experimental outputs was observed. This study will help in understanding the behavior of sustainable FRP-confined symmetric concrete members.
Estimating the quantitate contribution of climate and land use change is necessary for planning water resources. Tarbela catchment in Pakistan was selected for this study. The Mann Kendall and Pettit test has been used for trend analysis of hydro climatic variables. Original climate elasticity method and improved empirical model of precipitation have been used. The results of trend analysis showed that precipitation and runoff trends decreased and potential evaporation trends increased. The annual rainfall and runoff presented a change point around the years 1999 and 1994 respectively. According to change point analysis, the runoff series was divided into two parts. The period before change point has been regarded as the pre-change period and the period after change point has been regarded as the post change period. According to the original climate elasticity method, the relative contribution of climate change and land use change has been computed as 39.3% and 60.7% respectively. Similarly the improved empirical model of precipitation showed relative contributions of climate change as 41.7% and the same for land use change as 58.3%. To validate the land use change contribution we prepared land use maps. It can be concluded that land use and climate change are responsible for runoff change in Tarbela catchment, and both methods performed well and results are in agreement.
The development of the bus rapid transit system (BRTS) is tremendously growing in developing countries of the world. In large cities, the projection of transportation intends to enhance economic growth and changes the image of the city for both residents and outsiders. The purpose of this research was to study the application of alternative options for energy efficient BRTS in developing countries. The BRTS has some of its accessibility patterns that relate to the socio-economic strata. A decision-making efficiency analysis methodology has been applied to analyze the comparative analysis of both conventional fuel and hybrid bus systems for the Multan city of Pakistan. The section-wise application of a hybrid energy-based bus system has been analyzed in comparison to the conventional bus system. Out of 21 stations, the efficiency-wise hybrid bus system remained superior or equivalent to the standard value of 1 except one midpoint section. The finding of the analysis indicates that the hybrid mechanism of buses can not only replace a conventional fuel-based system, but will also help as an energy-efficient and eco-friendly economical solution. This study will help to revolutionize the bus rapid transit system in developing countries.
The amount of fines in sand greatly influence the permeability of sandy soils. Thus, this research was conducted to study the effect of plastic and non-plastic fines on the permeability of three types of sands (Lawrencepur sand, Chenab sand and Ravi sand). For this purpose, plastic and non-plastic fines were collected from different location of Lahore. Samples were prepared by mixing plastic and non-plastic fines into each type of sand separately, in amounts ranging from 0% to 50% with increments of five percent. Overall 63 samples were prepared. Sieve analysis and hydrometric analysis were performed to obtain particle size distribution for each sample. Atterberg’s limits were also determined and each sample was classified according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Compaction tests were performed on all samples as per the procedure in a standard Proctor test. The test samples were compacted in permeability molds with optimum moisture contents to obtain the density, as per a standard Proctor test. Hydraulic conductivity tests were performed on all sixty-three samples using a constant head permeameter and a falling head permeameter. Permeability results were plotted against the percentage of fines added. It was noted from the curves that the permeability of sand-fine mixtures shows a decreasing trend with the addition of fine contents. A few trials were performed to formulate a correlation. Validation of the correlation was performed with the results of 52 data sets from the field. Finally, the devised correlation was compared with three empirical equations proposed by Mujtaba, Kozeny–Carman and Hazen.
