Summary 1. Synthetic oestrogens (hexoestrol/stilboestrol, hexoestrol and stilboestrol) exert antibacterial effects on Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus in concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 10 mg./ml. Stilboestrol possesses a very powerful antibacterial action as compared with hexoestrol and hexoestrol/stilboestrol. Natural oestrogens (oestrone, oestradiol and oestradiol dipropionate) in doses of 1, 10 and 100 mg. per ml. neither promote nor reduce growth of M. pyogenes var. aureus significantly. 2. Androgens (testosterone, testosterone propionate, and methyltestosterone) in concentrations of 1, 10 and 100 mg./ml. promote the growth of M. pyogenes, and Corynebacterium pyogenes significantly. 3. Progestational compounds (progesterone and ethisterone), in concentrations of 1, 10 and 100 mg./ml. promote growth of M. pyogenes and C. pyogenes significantly. Progesterone had a highly significant effect on the growth of all the bacteria tested.
