Hypertrophic and hypoxic visceral adipose tissue (VAT) secretes proinflammatory cytokines promoting insulin resistance (IR), prediabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) microRNAs (miRNAs) are markers of metabolic disorders regulating genes critical for e.g., inflammation, glucose metabolism, and antioxidant defense, with raising diagnostic value. The aim of the current study was to evaluate whether hyperglycemia is able to affect the expression of selected miRNAs in VAT of prediabetic (IFG) and diabetic (T2DM) patients vs. normoglycemic (NG) subjects using qPCR. Statistical analyses suggested that miRNAs expression could be sex-dependent. Thus, we determined 15 miRNAs as differentially expressed (DE) among NG, T2DM, IFG females (miR-10a-5p, let-7d-5p, miR-532-5p, miR-127-3p, miR-125b-5p, let-7a-5p, let-7e-5p, miR-199a-3p, miR-365a-3p, miR-99a-5p, miR-100-5p, miR-342-3p, miR-146b-5p, miR-204-5p, miR-409-3p). Majority of significantly changed miRNAs was similarly upregulated in VAT of female T2DM and IFG patients in comparison to NG subjects, positively correlated with FPG and HbA1c, yet, uncorrelated with WHR/BMI. Enrichment analyses indicated involvement of 11 top DE miRNAs in oxidative stress, inflammation and insulin signaling. Those miRNAs expression changes could be possibly associated with low-grade chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in VAT of hyperglycemic subjects.

Upfront chemotherapy combined with palliative radiotherapy (30 Gy) is a promising treatment option in the subpopulation of patients with stage IIIA to IIIB NSCLC not amenable for definitive chemoradiotherapy and deserves further investigation.

Background: The five-year relative survival rate in Poland is approximately 10% lower compared with the average for Europe. One of the factors that may contribute to the inferior treatment results in Poland could be the long time between cancer suspicion and the beginning of treatment. The aim of the study was to determine the real waiting time for cancer diagnosis and treatment in Poland. Methods: The study was carried out in six cancer centers on a group of 1373 patients, using a questionnaire to interview patients. The median waiting time was estimated as follows: (A) from suspicion (the date of the first visit, with symptoms, to a doctor or a preventive or screening test) until histopathological diagnosis; (B) from suspicion until initial treatment; and (C) from diagnosis until initial treatment. Results: The median times from suspicion to treatment, from suspicion to diagnosis, and from diagnosis to treatment, were 10.6, 5.6, and 5.0 weeks, respectively. Using multivariate analysis, the strongest influence was estimated, in a case of tumor localization, to be the method of initial treatment and facilities. Conclusion: The waiting time for cancer treatment in Poland is too long. The highest influence on waiting time was determined, in the case of tumors, as the type of cancer and factors related to the health care system.

Nosocomial infections caused by strains Acinetobacter baumannii strands are a growing clinical problem.The occurrence of multidrug-resistant strands is observed and that limits the ways of therapy considerably. the aim of the study was to determine the rate of infection and susceptibility spectrum of the species Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from patients treated at Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Hospital in Zgierz with particular emphasis on surgical wards. Materials and methods. The material consisted of Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were obtained from samples of materials from patients treated at Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Hospital in Zgierz from January to December 2011. Isolated bacterial strains were cultured at microbiological substrates. Isolates were identified to species using the VITEK 2 GN card (bioMérieux) and Vitek 2 automated system (bioMérieux). Susceptibility towards antibiotics of particular strains was determined by the means of AST NO 93 card. In the case of resistance towards carbapenem, the MIC was marked by E-test with Mueller Hinton substrate. The occurrence of MBL was verified by the means of disc system with Mueller Hinton substrate. Results. We have shown that total number of Acinetobacter baumannii infections at hospital was 140 (10,31% of total results of cultures). Percentage of Acinetobacter baumannii infections at wards: Intensive Care Unit 48%, Surgical Departments 20%, Internal Diseases Department 16%, Neurology 13%, other wards -3%. The susceptibility percentage of Acinetobacter Baumannii against antibiotics: colistin 90%, imipenem 64%, meropenem 43%, ampicillin-sulbactam 28%, amikacin 27%, gentamicin 24%, cefepime 9%, ceftazidime 7%, ciprofloxacin 7% conclusions. Acinetobacter baumannii infections are a significant proportion of nosocomial infections. Most relate to surgical wards and ICUs. Acinetobacter baumannii is resistant against most antibiotics. The highest percentage of sensitivity demonstrated for colistin and carbapenems.

Background: Prostate cancer is the second most common reason of mortality due to cancer among men in Poland. The study aimed to determine the waiting time for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. Methods: The study was carried out on patients treated for prostate cancer from May 2014 to February 2015 at five oncological centres in Poland. The median waiting time was measured from the time cancer was suspected to the histopathological diagnosis (SDI), from the cancer suspicion to the start of treatment (STI) and from the diagnosis to the start of treatment (DTI). Results: 123 males treated for prostate cancer were included for analysis. The median time for SDI, STI and DTI was 7.7, 18.7 and 8.7 weeks, respectively. Place of residence was the only factor which influenced STI (p = 0.003). For patients, who started treatment with radiation therapy DTI was longer than for other patients (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Median times of STI, SDI and DTI for prostate cancer patients in Poland are similar to the intervals described in other countries. Patients, who lived further from an oncology centre waited longer for treatment. The impact of waiting time in the case of prostate cancer on improving the prognosis is still unclear.
