Although smoking increases morbidity and mortality among patients in addictions clinics, few clinics provide routine smoking treatment. To understand staff attitudes toward treatment, we surveyed leaders of outpatient methadone treatment clinics nationwide. Our response rate was 59% (408/697). Most clinic leaders thought they should provide smoking treatment (76%) or refer patients for care (91%); however, fewer than half of these had provided treatment in the month prior to the survey. Leaders said smoking treatment would benefit their clinics, patients and communities, but said barriers-primarily insufficient staff training-prevented routine care. Addressing these barriers could increase smoking treatment in addictions clinics and save lives.
Human posterior intraparietal sulcus (pIPS) and adjacent posterior wall of parieto-occipital sulcus (POS) are functionally diverse, serving higher motor, visual and cognitive functions. Its microstructural basis, though, is still largely unknown. A similar or even more pronounced architectonical complexity, as described in monkeys, could be assumed. We cytoarchitectonically mapped the pIPS/POS in 10 human postmortem brains using an observer-independent, quantitative parcellation. 3D-probability maps were generated within MNI reference space and used for functional decoding and meta-analytic coactivation modeling based on the BrainMap database to decode the general structural–functional organization of the areas. Seven cytoarchitectonically distinct areas were identified: five within human pIPS, three on its lateral (hIP4-6) and two on its medial wall (hIP7-8); and two (hPO1, hOc6) in POS. Mediocaudal areas (hIP7, hPO1) were predominantly involved in visual processing, whereas laterorostral areas (hIP4-6, 8) were associated with higher cognitive functions, e.g. counting. This shift was mirrored by systematic changes in connectivity, from temporo-occipital to premotor and prefrontal cortex, and in cytoarchitecture, from prominent Layer IIIc pyramidal cells to homogeneous neuronal distribution. This architectonical mosaic within human pIPS/POS represents a structural basis of its functional and connectional heterogeneity. The new 3D-maps of the areas enable dedicated assessments of structure–function relationships.
In the shoe manufacturing sector, products are typically designed for a small number of sample sizes, whereas all other shoe sizes in the range (for example, 2 to 4 shoe sizes below and above) are scaled using grading methods. However, the grading process significantly affects the fit and thus consumer acceptance. In this context, the shoe last forms the basis for all additional components to be used, such as insoles, midsoles, outsoles and heels. The entire shaft construction is based on the last as well. It also determines the fit of shoes. However, a method once established in the 1930s and still used today for the grading of shoe lasts is limited to only two dimensions, i.e. last length and technical ball circumference. The entire last is enlarged or reduced on the basis of these dimensions. The 3D CAD systems available today still employ the principle of mechanical last copying based on machines from the 1930s. Thus, the technical potential of these CAD systems is far from exhausted. An innovative grading process allows shoe companies to better utilize and significantly expand the performance potential and technical capabilities of their 3D CAD systems. As the required amount of manual work in preparation for grading and last generation is considerably decreased, development times are shortened.
Parque Nacional do Itatiaia ABSTRACTThe increasing demand of visiting natural areas, and the fact that these areas sometimes coincide with fragile ecosystems cause negative impacts on the environment. In recent years, visitation pressure has been increasing for all natural areas because of the popularization of ecotourism. Therefore, increasingly, it is necessary to find ways to cope with the impacts from visitation without necessarily reducing or curtailing its use. Hence, evaluation and monitoring of public use impacts are considered key tools for managing visitation. Given the above, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of public use on a trail of the Itatiaia National park, the Brejos trail, which has seen intensified use in recent years, and to provide data that can support management proposals. As a method of evaluating the conditions of the trail and its attractions, we used VIM (Visitor Impact Management). This includes the selection of impact-Ievel indicators and verifiers, the evaluation of appropriateness of selected variables, the collection of data throughout the area, the comparison of data obtained in standard or ideal situations, and the proposal of management measures. The results show that the trail is still relatively well preserved, with various drainage points made by the
