The Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens) is a monogamous, widespread, neotropical, pelagic seabird with low flight costs, high dispersal capacity, sex-biased dispersal, and female mate choice. Here, we adopt an integrative approach to evaluate the influence of behavior, male-biased philopatry, female choice, and geographic distance as non-physical barriers to dispersal acting on the genetic structure of magnificent frigatebirds in the 4 largest Mexican breeding colonies. We integrate ecological dispersal observations from tagging studies, analyses of maternally and biparentally inherited genetic markers, and group-structured population modeling. Mitochondrial DNA (matrilineal) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (biparental) data provided evidence of genetic differentiation between ocean basins, as well as among Eastern Pacific breeding colonies, and absence of a genetic pattern of isolation by distance. Our ecological, genetic, and modeling results are concordant with the expected effects of sex-biased philopatry and female mate choice as non-physical barriers to interbreeding, and suggest that geographic distance does not play a significant role in the genetic distinction of breeding colonies. The genetic differentiation found between Eastern Pacific and Caribbean, as well as that among Eastern Pacific breeding colonies is of consequence for the management plans and conservation measures of the Magnificent Frigatebird in the region.

ResumenLa Reserva de la Biosfera de Calakmul es el área de selva tropical conservada más grande de México, ubicada al sur de la penín-sula de Yucatán. Es un área natural protegida y un espacio para la conservación de las aves en México (aica 171). Alberga temporal o permanentemente gran diversidad de especies de aves neotropicales y neárticas; sin embargo, existe una discrepancia de hasta 19% respecto del número de especies reportadas en esta reserva. Con el fin de actualizar el inventario de la avifauna de la reserva compilamos, revisamos y cotejamos los registros reportados en documentos publicados, literatura gris, bases de datos públicas, listados oficiales y colecciones ornitológicas. Incluimos también información sobre estacionalidad, abundancia, endemismo, ca tegoría de conservación y valores de vulnerabilidad reportados en las diversas fuentes que consultamos. Compilamos datos de 403 especies de aves para la reserva, lo cual significa el número más grande de especies reportadas; se trata del listado más completo y actualizado a la fecha. La actualización de inventarios es fundamental tanto para conocer los recursos disponibles en un área determinada como para desarrollar planes de manejo que permitan conservar las especies y sus ecosistemas, especialmente si se trata de áreas naturales protegidas.Palabras clave: áreas naturales protegidas, aica, aves, biodiversidad, neotrópico. Inventory update of birds in Calakmul BiosphereReserve, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico: abundance, seasonality, and conservation status AbstractThe Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, in the south of the Yucatan Peninsula, is the largest preserved tropical forest area in Mexico. It has been designated both as a natural protected area and an Important Bird Area for México (aica 171). A high diversity of Neotropical and Neartical bird species inhabit the reserve permanently or seasonally, but discrepancies exist in the number of bird species recorded (up to 19%). To update the inventory of bird species in the reserve, we compiled, reviewed, and compared reported bird data from published documents, grey literature, public databases, official lists, and ornithological collections. In this bird inventory, we included information on seasonality, abundance, endemism, conservation status, and vulnerability values. We compiled data of 403 bird species for the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, the highest number to date, thereby providing the most complete and recent list. Inventory updating is essential to recognize the natural resources available in a given area, and to deve lop management plans that conserve species and ecosystems in which they live, especially in the case of natural protected areas.
