tendo como orientador de sua tese Jean Piaget. Em Sorbonne construiu sua carreira consolidada como professor, sendo durante vários anos diretor de pesquisa do Centre National de Rechesches Scientifiques (CNRS), na área de psicologia do desenvolvimento cognitivo.
O desempenho dos estudantes brasileiros em matemática nas avaliações sistêmicas tem revelado lacunas. Considerando que o domínio do Sistema de Numeração Decimal é base para aprendizagem de conceitos matemáticos, a pergunta norteadora desta pesquisa foi: o que revelaram as avaliações diagnósticas aplicadas em distintas séries no Brasil e em Portugal? O objetivo geral foi compreender aspectos em relação à aprendizagem dos números e suas operações, apresentados na resolução das avaliações diagnósticas. Para a coleta de dados, foi aplicada uma avaliação diagnóstica, seguida de sua correção e análise. Buscou-se respaldo teórico em Luckesi (2010), Caraça (2010), Vergnaud (2009), Fernandes (2006), Desprebitéris (2001), entre outros. A avaliação diagnóstica revelou pontos-chave da aprendizagem e que, especificamente nas quatro turmas em que foi aplicada, a interpretação de texto, as frações e a passagem da linguagem formal para a linguagem algébrica − na resolução de problemas − não foram aprendidas por completo. Em relação às avaliações diagnósticas, estas se constituem em um rico instrumento, capaz de mapear a situação de aprendizagem dos conceitos, servindo como ponto de retomada e redirecionamento da condução do conteúdo a ser retrabalhado, bem como revisão das práticas pedagógicas dotadas para este objetivo.
