RESUMO Este trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar contribuições teóricas e empíricas para um melhor entendimento e consequente aplicação da proposta de Kato (2005). A referida autora propõe uma divisão entre Gramática Nuclear e Periferia Marcada para dar conta de algumas variações e irregularidades encontradas nos falantes. Iniciamos nos apoiando em trabalhos já realizados para elaborar uma lista de critérios que possam ser avaliados como úteis para que seja possível delimitar quais fenômenos sintáticos pertenceriam a cada um dos componentes propostos por Kato (2005). Uma experiência com um teste de julgamento de gramaticalidade, com o tópico da colocação pronominal, aplicado a falantes brasileiros com nível superior, é descrita como sendo uma fonte relevante para a obtenção de dados que informarão a respeito da delimitação acima exposta. Nossos comentários finais procuram ir além da contribuição para a pesquisa acadêmica, pois visamos também sua aplicação prática em situações formais de ensino que possam vir a se beneficiar da divisão proposta por Kato (2005).
