It has often been suggested that two or more independent observers would form a more sensitive detection unit than any one of them alone. This prediction is based on the fact that the sensitivity of an individual varies from moment to moment, so that if one observer is momentarily insensitive, another may detect the signal. In the simplest case, if each of two independent observers has a probability of i/2 of hearing a signal, then the probability that both will fail to hear it is i/s x \/z -i/t, and the probability that one, the other, or both will hear it is %.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
