Resumo: O presente trabalho visa a refletir sobre a força enunciativa da figura retórica da ironia, que se constitui de um raciocínio argumentativo indireto, mas não menos persuasivo. Ao afirmar o contrário do que realmente se deseja enunciar, ao pôr em destaque uma conclusão diferente daquela que se pretende e suas consequências, ao apontar a absurdidade, a falta de lógica, a contrariedade aos princípios admitidos, estabelecese uma distância, pelo menos parcial, entre orador e auditório. Partindo de conhecimentos em comum acerca de fatos, normas ou opiniões, e mesmo a respeito das posições pessoais do orador, a ironia expõe aquele a quem é dirigida a uma argumentação de forte impacto. Nesse processo, o lógos revela as diferenças, os níveis de tensões entre os interlocutores, podendo, como resultado, reforçar as identidades fracas, reduzir as diferenças fortes, ou mesmo, estabelecer o distanciamento definitivo. A presente análise será realizada a partir do ferramental da Nova Retórica perelmaniana, observando o papel persuasivo dessa figura retórica nas manobras de influência daquele que a enuncia. Tendo em vista que partimos dos textos escritos em língua grega, a gramática do Prof. Henrique Murachco será o nosso aparato teórico para as traduções em língua portuguesa.
