Vehicle traffic congestion leads to air pollution, driver frustration, and costs billions of dollars annually in fuel consumption. Finding a proper solution to vehicle congestion is a considerable challenge due to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the network topology of vehicular environments, especially in urban areas. Instead of using static algorithms, e.g. Dijkstra and A*, we present a bio-inspired algorithm, food search behavior of ants, which is a promising way of solving traffic congestion in vehicular networks. We have called this the Antbased Vehicle Congestion Avoidance System (AVCAS). AVCAS combines the average travel speed prediction of traffic on roads with map segmentation to reduce congestion as much as possible by finding the least congested shortest paths in order to avoid congestion instead of recovering from it. AVCAS collects real-time traffic data from vehicles and road side units to predict the average travel speed of roads traffic. It utilizes this information to perform an ant-based algorithm on a segmented map resulting in avoidance of congestion. Simulation results conducted on various vehicle densities show that the proposed system outperforms the existing systems in terms of average travel time, which decreased by an average of 11.5%, and average travel speed which increased by an average of 13%. In addition, AVCAS handles accident conditions in a more efficient way and decreases congestion by using alternative paths.

The rapid growth of distributed computing systems that heavily communicate and interact with each other has raised the importance of confrontation against cyber intruders, attackers, and subversives. With respect to the emergence of cloud computing and its deployment all over the world, and because of its distributed and decentralized nature, a special security requirement is needed to protect this paradigm. Intrusion detection systems could differentiate usual and unusual behaviors by means of supervising, verifying, and controlling the configurations, log files, network traffic, user activities, and even the actions of different processes by which they could add new security dimensions to the cloud computing systems. The position of the intrusion detection mechanisms in cloud computing systems as well as the applied algorithms in those mechanisms are the 2 main factors in which many researches have focused on. The goal of those researches is to uncover intrusions as much as possible and to increase the rate and accuracy of detections while reducing the false warnings. Those solutions, however, mainly have high computational loads, low accuracy, and high implementation costs. In this paper, we present a comprehensive and accurate solution to detect and prevent intrusions in cloud computing systems by using a hybrid method, called HIDCC. The implementation results of the proposed method show that the intrusion coverage, intrusion detection accuracy, reliability, and availability in cloud computing systems are considerably increased, and false warnings are significantly reduced. Ant-based algorithms simulate the cooperative behaviour of real ants in finding food resources. A significant number of studies have focused on the self-organised behaviour of ants in the natural environment to develop effective systems for dynamic problems. Ant-based systems have special properties such as scalability, adaptability, and dynamicity, which are the main requirements for solving vehicle traffic congestion problem. Thus, ant-based algorithms are now being adopted by vehicle traffic systems (VTSs) to guide vehicles to less congested paths. However, literature shows that comprehensive reviews are lacking in this field. The main contribution of this paper is the review and classification of the most relevant systems based on novel taxonomy. A survey that includes statistical analyses on ant-based VTS was conducted to identify the limitations and evaluation process of VTS.
