Abstract:The study assesses international competitiveness, profitability, output supply and input demand of maize production using a farm survey data of 165 farmers from two major maize growing areas (i.e., Dinajpur and Lalmonirhat districts) of northwestern Bangladesh. Results revealed that maize production is globally competitive and, therefore, can successfully substitute its import. Maize production is also profitable at the farm level (Benefit Cost Ratio = 1.21) with no adverse influence of farm size on yield and profitability. Maize farmers are also responsive to changes in market prices of inputs and outputs. A 1% increase in maize price will increase output supply by 0.4%. The most dominant driver of maize supply and other input demands is land. A 1% increase in available land will increase maize supply by a substantial 3.9%. In addition, landless laborers will benefit through an increase in hired labor demand when land area increases. Policy implications include investments in R&D, tenurial reform to consolidate land holding and smooth functioning of the hired labor market in order to increase maize production and profitability in Bangladesh.

The paper measures the level of crop diversity and identifies factors influencing diversification using a panel data of 17 regions of Bangladesh covering a 19 year period (1990–2008). Results revealed the trends that agricultural areas allocated to high‐yielding variety rice, spices and vegetables has increased, while areas cultivating traditional rice, minor cereals, oilseeds, pulses, jute and sugarcane has declined at variable rates across regions with significant differences. The level of crop diversity is also significantly different across regions and has decreased in 2008 from its 1990 level in most regions except Faridpur, Khulna and Sylhet. Among the determinants, an increase in the relative prices of vegetables and urea fertilizer, extension expenditure, labour stock per farm, average farm size, irrigation and a reduction in livestock per farm significantly increase crop diversity. Price policies to improve vegetable prices and investment in irrigation infrastructure and extension services are suggested to promote crop diversity in Bangladesh.

This study examines whether crop diversification provides economy in energy use and improves technical energy efficiency using a large survey data of 2,075 farms from 20 subdistricts of 17 districts in Bangladesh by applying a stochastic input-distance function approach. The results reveal that cereal production significantly increases energy use by 0.14% for every one percent increase` in output. Renewable source of energy constitutes 59.6% of total inputs and labour energy alone constitutes 39%. Significant output complementarity exists between cereal and oilseed enterprises but competition exist between jute with pulse and/or oilseed enterprises. The mean technical energy efficiency is estimated at 68% implying that energy output can be increased by 32% by eliminating inefficiency.Diversification amongst enterprises is associated with energy inefficiency, implying that specialization into cereals improves efficiency. Large farms are inefficient whereas large family size improves efficiency. The key policy implication is that diversification of crop enterprises must maintain cereal (i.e., rice/wheat/maize) as the main base and then add noncereal crops (e.g., oilseeds) in order to improve energy economy. Also, diversification within cereals from rice monoculture to wheat and/or maize will significantly improve technical energy efficiency. JEL classification: O33; Q18; C21

Potato is the third largest food crop in Bangladesh by tonnage of production. Its acreage and production are also increasing in day after day. This study was accomplished to examine the profitability and resource use efficiency of potato cultivation in five upazilas of Munshiganj district of Bangladesh. A total of 52 farmers were selected randomly from the study area. Data were collected through farm survey by using a suitable pre-tested questionnaire in February-March, 2016. Profitability analysis, Cobb-Douglas production function, MVP, MFC and Farm Budgeting model were used to analyze the objectives. Average gross return, gross margin and net return were found Tk. 3,47,200, Tk. 1,47,125 and Tk. 1,17,300, respectively. Benefit-cost ratio was found 1.51 and 1.74 on full cost and variable cost basis, respectively. The key production factors, i.e. human labour, land preparation, seed, fertilizer, insecticides and irrigations had significant effect on gross return of potato. Resource use efficiency analysis revealed that farmers were not efficient in using resources in potato cultivation. Human labor, land preparation, insecticide and irrigation were under-utilized and therefore increasing use of those resources could maximize the profitability. Seed and fertilizer constituted major parts of the cost of production hence optimum use of those resources could also enhance the profitability and resource use efficiency of potato cultivation in Munshiganj district.

Abstract:The study assesses the future potential of the jute sector in Bangladesh by examining its growth performance, international competitiveness, profitability, and production efficiency using national time-series data of over the period 1973-2013 and farm survey data from 289 farmers from two major jute growing areas of Bangladesh. Results revealed that the jute sector has experienced substantial growth in area, production, productivity, prices, and exports. However, productivity has stagnated during the latter 10-year period (2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013), while it grew at a rate of 1.3% per annum (p.a.) during the first 31-year period . Only traditional jute production is globally competitive, although financial profitability of white jute is relatively higher (benefit cost ratio = 1.24 and 1.17, respectively). Land, labor, and irrigation are the main productivity drivers for jute. The mean production efficiency of jute is estimated at 75% indicating substantial scope to improve yield by eliminating inefficiency. Marginal farmers are relatively inefficient. Policy implications include investments in research and development, irrigation, and tenurial reform and export protection for white jute in order to revive the sector and boost export earnings.

Bangladesh is a least developed country where a large number of population in rural areas live under substantial poverty. Recently, a phenomenal growth has witnessed in accessing mobile phone and internet which showing a new way for trade and commerce (e-commerce). But it is a big challenge to establish and provide the facilities of e-commerce to the majority population live in rural areas. This study explores the potential role of e-commerce in promoting sustainable and equitable development in rural areas. We discuss the possibilities of using e-commerce technology in a way that will benefit the rural communities. The growth of mobile and internet users, the digital divide between rural and urban population, problems related with dispersing the service of e-commerce in rural areas and future prospects are presented. There are a number of challenges but however, recently introduced community e-centers has a good potential which can provide the services of e-commerce in rural areas. In addition, to support low-income rural population, there is a need for governmental funding for expansion and development of rural infrastructure.
