RESUMENEl propósito de este trabajo es analizar la influencia del estilo de vida y el progreso científico-técnico en el desarrollo de obesidad y su repercusión en la salud y la sociedad. Los estilos de vida no saludables que son modificables por la conducta como el sedentarismo y los malos hábitos nutricionales, contribuyen a la aparición de sobrepeso corporal y obesidad, que constituye un factor de riesgo para el inicio de enfermedades crónicas como la diabetes mellitus, la cardiopatía isquémica y el cáncer. El desarrollo científico-técnico ha permitido el mejoramiento de las condiciones de vida, la humanización de las condiciones de trabajo y la facilitación de las tareas domésticas. Este hecho, unido a la existencia de insuficientes políticas de salud en función de los cambios enunciados propicia el incremento del sedentarismo.
