The process of residential suburbanisation may cause changes in the age structure of the population as the age composition of in-migrants is younger than long-term residents. However, the demographic change associated with the second demographic transition as well as the co-existence of suburbanisation and reurbanisation of inner city areas may have ambiguous impacts on the age composition. The aim of this paper is to show changes in the age structure of the population in a post-socialist city in the light of suburbanisation using the example of the Kraków Metropolitan Area. In particular, we sought to show whether the intensive development of this process results in the inhibition of population ageing due to the influx of people in suburban areas along with the outward diffusion of the behaviours associated with the second demographic transition.
The globalization of the automotive industry in the last twenty years has manifested itself ina rapid increase in the assembly of automobiles and the production of automotive components and spareparts outside of the traditional centers of automotive manufacturing. On the basis of contemporary researchand literature, we can distinguish two types of emerging centers of automobile manufacturing.First are potentially large domestic markets with a low level of motor vehicle ownership and rapidlygrowing economy such as Brazil. The second type of new automobile manufacturing center consistsof the peripheries of automotive core regions such as Mexico in the case of the North American coreregion and Central Europe in the case of the Western European core region. These new growth centershave benefitted from their lower production costs compared to those of core regions and their geographicproximity to the largest automobile markets. These emerging centers of manufacturing havebecome attractive locations, especially for export-oriented manufacturing facilities operated by largetransnational automotive corporations attempting to improve their global competitiveness. The purposeof this paper is to evaluate the effect of foreign direct investment on the development of automobile productionin these three emerging regions. The paper reviews post-1990 production trends and changes inthe geography of automobile production, especially new greenfield investments in the three analyzedregions. We examine changes in international trade in Brazil, Mexico and Central Europe with a focuson automobiles and automobile parts. Based on the results of our research, we determine the effects offoreign direct investment and industrial upgrading on the role of these emerging production centers inthe global production system.
Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) leads to a better knowledge of urban spatial organisation, which may play a significant role in regional policy making and may be helpful in understanding the connection between urbanisation and demographic development. An explanation of population change in urban regions can be associated the second demographic transition comprising fertility decline below replacement level and postponement of births.
The aim of this paper is to focus on establishing similarity patterns and anomalous values of selected demographic variables in the cores and peripheral areas of Functional Urban Areas. At the background of this study lies an assumption that population development of FUA's is shaped by different factors connected with second demographic transition and migrations. To achieve the aims the following demographic characteristics were used: population growth rate, dependency ratio, rate of natural increase, the net migration rate, and the dynamic economic ageing index, Spatial methods play an increasingly important role in contemporary socio-demographic research. In order to identify spatial systems Global Moran Statistics and the Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) including Local Moran statistics as well as Getis-Ord Gi* statistics were used.
The research showed global and local autocorrelation of demographic processes in Functional Urban Areas in Poland, namely population growth, natural increase, net migration and population ageing. The use of local Moran's I statistic and the Getis-Ord Gi* method has led to identification of spatial clusters and dispersions representing different demographic variables. Spatial autocorrelation methods can be useful in an analysis of demographic variables including changes in time. The main contribution of this study to the research on demographic processes in urban areas was an application of spatial groupings techniques not only to find out similarity and dissimilarity patterns of demographic indicators but also to apply this findings for the needs of spatial planning.
