The study of Mexican Sign Language (LSM) began in the 1980s. This dissertation is the first grammar written about this language and it is based on descriptive linguistics methodology. It follows the Boasian tradition of creating grammatical descriptions of American Indigenous languages not previously studied as a first fundamental step for its documentation and study. In addition, reference is made to the structure and history of the Mexican deaf community as a contribution to the understanding of the language. This research is organized into two large sections. The first one (Chapters 1 and 2) is a response to the lack of a tradition of studies on visuo-gestural languages in Mexico, and to the ignorance of the majority of the population regarding LSM and its users. The second section (Chapters 3-9) describes the organization of the linguistic system of LSM. These chapters lead the reader to understand the structure of LSM from the meaningless minimal unit to the creation of a text.Chapter 1 is a vital frame of reference for a reader initiating the study of sign language. It briefly covers the events which lead to identifying the development of research in sign language -from the pioneering studies on ASL in the 1960s until today -and it emphasizes the work of several researchers regarding the documentation of sign language in the American continent. This chapter also covers some studies of other disciplines which have significantly contributed not only to their status as natural languages, but also to the understanding of the nature of these languages and about its users. This introductory chapter includes a section with an outline of the structural aspects of sign language systems, as well as a review of the different transcription systems used in the research of this type of language. These general overviews serve as a preamble to the analysis in the following chapters.242 Miroslava Cruz-Aldrete Chapter 2 leads the reader to the specific study of LSM. Although a review of the studies about this language is included -from the first to the most recent ones -, special emphasis is given to the history and the ethno-linguistic characteristics of the deaf community in Mexico, with a discussion regarding who it includes, its geographic location, the number of users, and the attitude towards the language.Chapter 3 presents the methodology used for the analysis of LSM. It describes the selection of the informants, the techniques used for the collection and analysis of the corpus, the determination of the transcription forms needed for the analysis of each one of the linguistic levels of LSM, and the establishment of conventions for the manual gloss and for the non-manual features. The corpus includes: (a) data from spontaneous situations or performed in a natural context; and (b) data collected through various elicitation techniques. All the sessions of elicitation were recorded on video. The informants that participated in this research are native signers of LSM.Chapters 4-9 cover the grammatical characteristics of LSM...
