ABSTRACT DETAILED PHENOLOGICAL SCALE OF THE REPRODUCTIVE PHASE OF COFFEA ARABICAIn this paper is proposed a detailed phenological scale to identify and characterize the reproductive cycle of Coffea arabica. The study was carried out under field conditions using IAPAR 59 cultivar, from May 2004 to May 2005 in Londrina, state of Parana, Brazil (23 o 23' S, 50 o 11' W, 610 m). Periodically measurements of growth and evolution of the external morphology of the floral buds, flowers and fruits of the plagiotropic branches were taken. In the proposed scale, the reproductive development of coffee was divided in four main phases: Floral bud development (G), Flowering (FL), Fructification (F), and Maturation (M). The phases G and F were subdivided based on bud and fruit size, varying from G 1 to G 6 and F 1 to F 6 . To describe maturation, the fruits were classified according to external color: M 1 -green, M 2 -yellowish, M 3 -light red (cherry), M 4 -dark red, and M 5 -black (dry). The proposed scale could subsidize studies of growth, productivity and management of the coffee crop.
-Recent studies on coffee (Coffea arabica L.) cultivation in agroforestry systems in Southern Brazil have shown the potential of partial shading to improve management of this crop. The objective of this work was to evaluate microclimatic conditions and their effects on coffee production of plants shaded with pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) in comparison to unshaded ones, from May 2001 to August 2002 in Londrina, State of Paraná, Brazil. The appraised microclimatic characteristics were: global radiation, photosynthetic and radiation balance; air, leaf and soil temperatures; and soil humidity. Shading caused significant reduction in incident global solar radiation, photosynthetically active radiation and net radiation, and attenuated maximum leaf, air and soil temperatures, during the day. Shade also reduced the rate of cooling of night air and leaf temperatures, especially during nights with radiative frost. Soil moisture at 0-10 cm depth was higher under shade. The shaded coffee plants produced larger cherries due to slower maturation, resulting in larger bean size. Nevertheless, plants under shade emitted less plagiotropic branches, with smaller number of nodes per branch, and fewer nodes with fruits, resulting in a large reduction in coffee production. These results show the need to find an optimal tree density and management that do not compromise coffee production and protect against extreme temperatures.Index terms: Coffea arabica, Cajanus cajan, frost protection, photosynthetically active radiation, coffee production, shade.
Palavras-chave: Matéria orgânica, plantio direto, carbono orgânico AbstractThe soil degradation is related to inadequate use of tillage systems, which result in decrease of organic matter content, chemical fertility and physical attributes. The no-tillage system is effective in protection of the soil surface. This study aimed to evaluate the carbon content of the oxissol under conventional tillage, no-tillage and pasture systems, using a secondary forest in regeneration as reference. As smaller the mobilization and larger the maintenance in soil of the vegetable residue, larger were the content of organic carbon and of residual carbon.
