The aim of this study was to quantify antioxidant substances and chlorophyll content, as well as to measure the antioxidant activity in cassava leaf flour (CLF) of different cultivars at several plant ages, in order to lead to a higher utilization of these leaves, and consequently to an enhancement of this agricultural by-product. The contents of antioxidant substances (vitamin C, polyphenols and β-carotene) were regarded as high and increased as the plants matured. The chlorophyll content decreased with plant maturity and presented a negative correlation with antioxidant substances, which indicates that the highest antioxidant levels are found when the plant presents low chlorophyll levels. CLF showed a high antioxidant activity when the lipid oxidation inhibition method (β-carotene/linoleic acid) was used, and moderate when the free radical capture method (ABTS) was used. The main contribution to the CLF antioxidant activity seems to be provided by vitamin C, which presented the best correlation with the ABTS test. Out of the ages studied, that of 14 months presented the highest antioxidant levels; Mocotó and Pão da China cultivars stood out the most.
AbstractThe objective of this study was to characterize phenolic compounds and evaluate the effect, under laboratory conditions, of the cassava leaf powder methanol extract on the development of fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda and of leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa. The extract was incorporated into an artificial diet, to which the armyworm was exposed, at concentrations of 250, 500, 1000 and 1500 mg kg -1 , in order to evaluate biological characteristics. Soon after the insects emergence, another experiment was conducted to verify the possible sub lethal activity of the extract; therefore, S. frugiperda couples were isolated in cages and eggs were collected and counted. The Manihot esculenta Crantz extract caused a reduction in the percentage of armyworm survival, as well as in the eggs number. Then, the same extract was solubilized in 10% ethanol and applied to ants; mortality was observed, compared to the control. It is possible to conclude that the M. esculenta Crantz leaf powder methanolic extract, containing gallic acid and catechin, is a promising alternative to control S. frugiperda and Atta sexdens rubropilosa.
ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Coffea racemosa Lour. methanolic extract , a wild coffee specie that presents resistance against the coffee leaf-miner, a major pest of coffee crop. The methanol extract of C. racemosa leaves was sprayed on coffee seedlings, Coffea arabica cv. Catuaí, in greenhouse, which were exposed to adults of L. coffeella for oviposition in free choice test. Plants treated were less preferred for oviposition. An ovicidal assay was carried out by spraying the methanol extract on C. arabica seedlings containing L. coffeela eggs on their leaves. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with five replicates. Larvae hatching out from treated eggs were significantly reduced by the extract and non viable eggs presented some anomalies on their external surfaces according to analyses by scanning electron microscopy. However, the adults derived from treated eggs did not have the percentage of emergence, sex ratio and oviposition affected by the treatment. The results show that C. racemosa presents as a promising alternative to control the coffee leaf-miner, being necessary new studies to isolate and caracterize the bioactive substances against this pest.
