Este artigo analisa o governo representativo no Brasil, no decorrer do século XIX, de modo a apontar como a monarquia constitucional brasileira não se afastou dos modelos de representação política então vigentes na Europa. Com esse objetivo, o artigo examina o Poder Moderador, os critérios de cidadania e a legislação eleitoral.
ResumoO artigo enfoca o processo de construção do Estado nacional brasileiro sob o arranjo institucional criado com o Ato Adicional de 1834, que definiu as competências do governo central e dos governos provinciais. Marcado pela tensão entre esses poderes e por conflitos de interesses entre as elites regionais, tal processo teve na Câmara dos Deputados um importante espaço de negociação. Ao reconstituir os debates parlamentares em torno da regulamentação da aposentadoria e da legislação tributária, entre outros, a autora analisa o papel do Poder Legislativo na conciliação dos interesses regionais e nacionais.

Resumo Este artigo analisa o governo representativo no Brasil oitocentista do ponto de vista do exercício da cidadania e dos debates em torno da normatização das eleições. Neste sentido, dialoga com o texto de Hilda Sabato na medida que procura demonstrar que também na monarquia constitucional brasileira a relação de representação foi fundamental para o funcionamento do regime, colocando dilemas e desafios próprios a uma nação americana que se tornava independente.
