Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS) technology appears to be a general strategy to generate pluripotent stem cells from any given mammalian species. So far, iPS cells have been reported for mouse, human, rat, and monkey. These four species have also established embryonic stem cell (ESC) lines that serve as the gold standard for pluripotency comparisons. Attempts have been made to generate porcine ESC by various means without success. Here we report the successful generation of pluripotent stem cells from fibroblasts isolated from the Tibetan miniature pig using a modified iPS protocol. The resulting iPS cell lines more closely resemble human ESC than cells from other species, have normal karyotype, stain positive for alkaline phosphatase, express high levels of ESC-like markers (Nanog, Rex1, Lin28, and SSEA4), and can differentiate into teratomas composed of the three germ layers. Because porcine physiology closely resembles human, the iPS cells reported here provide an attractive model to study certain human diseases or assess therapeutic applications of iPS in a large animal model. Induced nuclear reprogramming through induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS)2 technology is an amazing achievement full of challenge to the intellect and important practical implications (1, 2). Overexpression of exogenous factors that are highly enriched in embryonic stem cell (ESC) can rearrange the genetic program of different cell types, including somatic and adult stem cells, and induce a long lasting ESC-like pluripotent state (3-7). The repercussions of iPS technology are vast: it provides a way to create patient-specific stem cells that bypasses ethical and technical issues surrounding human ESC derivation and somatic cell nuclear transfer (8, 9), a state of the art model for studying genetic diseases in vitro (10, 11), and an incredible backwards route that can crystallize our current understanding of developmental and stem cell biology. Many questions, especially mechanistic, remain unanswered, but the current rhythm of research may bring iPS to clinical application sooner than expected. However, before jumping onto such extraordinary endeavor, safety must be scrupulously tested in an animal model close enough to humans. Nowadays that iPS technology is expanding, with improved delivery systems, chemical additions, new tissue culture conditions, and multiple cell sources being reported regularly, such animal model is essential to set up quality standards (12-18). Mice, and maybe rats, will possibly continue unrivalled as the easier ways to learn about reprogramming machinery and improve methodology, but their size, physiology, and reduced lifespan are handicaps for making serious assumptions regarding safety in humans. Near infrared broadband emission characteristics of bismuth-doped aluminophosphate glass have been investigated. Broad infrared emissions peaking at 1210nm, 1173nm and 1300nm were observed when the glass was pumped by 405nm laser diode (LD), 514nm Ar+ laser and 808nm LD, respectively. The full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) are 235nm, 207nm and 300nm for the emissions at 1210nm, 1173nm and 1300nm, respectively. Based on the energy matching conditions, it is suggested that the infrared emission may be ascribed to 3P1? 3P0 transition of Bi+. The broadband infrared luminescent characteristics of the glasses indicate that they are promising for broadband optical fiber amplifiers and tunable lasers.

Broadband infrared luminescence from bismuth-doped germanium oxide glasses prepared by a conventional melting-quenching technique was discovered. The absorption spectrum of the glasses covered a wide range from the visible to the near-infrared wavelength regions and consisted of five broad peaks below 370, 500, 700, 800, and 1000 nm. The fluorescence spectrum exhibited broadband characteristics (FWHM) greater than 300 nm with a maximum at 1300 nm pumped by an 808-nm laser. The fluorescence lifetime at room temperature decreased with increasing Bi2O3 concentration in the glass. Codoping of aluminum and bismuth was indispensable for the broadband infrared luminescence in GeO2:Bi, Al glass.

We report near infrared broadband emission of bismuth-doped barium-aluminum-borate glasses. The broadband emission covers 1.3microm window in optical telecommunication systems. And it possesses wide full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ~200nm and long lifetime as long as 350micros. The luminescent properties are quite sensitive to glass compositions and excitation wavelengths. Based on energy matching conditions, we suggest that the infrared emission may be ascribed to 3P1? 3P0 transition of Bi+. The broad infrared emission characteristics of this material indicate that it might be a promising candidate for broadband optical fiber amplifiers and tunable lasers.

Near-infrared broadband emission from bismuth-tantalum-codoped germanium oxide glasses was observed at room temperature when the glasses were pumped by an 808 nm laser diode. The emission band covered the O, E, S, C, and L bands (1260-1625 nm), with a maximum peak at approximately 1310 nm, a FWHM broader than 400 nm, and a lifetime longer than 200 micros. The observed broadband luminescence was attributed to bismuth clusters in the glasses. Bismuth-tantalum-codoped germanium oxide glass might be promising as amplification media for broadly tunable lasers and wideband amplifiers in optical communications.

Bi-doped glasses with broadband photoluminescence in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range are presently receiving significant consideration for potential applications in telecommunications, widely tunable fiber lasers and spectral converters. However, the origin of NIR emission remains disputed. Here, we report on NIR absorption and emission properties of bismuthate glass and their dependence on the melting temperature. Results clarify that NIR emission occurs from the same centers as it does in Bi-doped glasses. The dependence of absorption and NIR emission of bismuthate glasses on the melting temperature is interpreted as thermal dissociation of Bi(2)O(3) into elementary Bi. Darkening of bismuthate glass melted at 1300 °C is due to the agglomeration of Bi atoms. The presence of Bi nanoparticles is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and element distribution mapping. By adding antimony oxide as an oxidation agent to the glass, NIR emission centers can be eliminated and Bi(3+) is formed. By comparing with atomic spectral data, absorption bands at ∼320 , ∼500 , 700 , 800 and 1000 nm observed in Bi-doped glasses are assigned to Bi(0) transitions [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively, and broadband NIR emission is assigned to the transition [Formula: see text].
