This systematic review analyzes the evidence of the effects of physical activity governmental programs oriented toward the health of independent older adults. Medline, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection databases were used for data mining, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols recommendations were followed. Five studies (n = 2,545 participants) fulfilled the established inclusion criteria. The physical activity programs had beneficial effects on the older adults' quality of life, fall risk, activities of daily living, physical activity levels, nutritional risk, body mass index, arterial pressure, resting heart rate, blood glucose, triglycerides, and/or cholesterol, but did not significantly alter their body fat mass percentage. Programs involving diverse physical capacities seem to be more effective for healthy aging. It is recommended that governments start to disseminate the outcomes of these programs within society and the scientific community.

Starting from Pérez and Gutiérrez’s previous bibliography (2008), the total number of published monographs following the criteria of subject, decade and the combination of both was analyzed. The results showed a total of 2.036 books (1.285 original editions) with a prevalence of Japanese and Chinese martial arts. A group of eight subjects exceeded a hundred volumes (karate, judo/jujutsu, taijiquan, wu-shu/kung fu, classics, qigong, philosophy, history and education, and aikido), with two patterns of bibliographic evolution appearing. The first, represented by Japanese martial arts considered as a group and martial arts focused on the utilitarian and/or sporting performance aspects (judo/jujutsu, karate and wu-shu/kung fu), developed increasingly until the 80’s when it followed a steady-state and/or drop. The second model, which characterises the Chinese martial arts group and martial arts mainly focused on healthy and/or spiritual aspects of training (taijiquan, qigong, aikido), has increased significantly from the 90’s until the present moment. The interpretation of these patterns and the evolution of the martial arts bibliographic production in Spain highlights some aspects such as the development of the Spanish society and sports practice, bibliographic production, reading habits, or the cultural influences of eastern countries on Spain.</span></span></span></p>

We then draw on these to present an analytical socio-historical discussion that situates this ongoing shift in the Asian martial arts away from the previous focus on utilitarian uses towards religio-spiritual self cultivation in the Spanish context. MethodologyThe method used for this research followed a two stage process and involved several analytical techniques. The purpose of the first stage was to create a reliable database of Asian martial arts monographs published in Spain. For that purpose, (1) documentary analysis of form (bibliographic description) and (2) documentary analysis of content (indexing, abstracting and subject analysis) techniques were used. The second stage was specifically focused in obtaining results from the annotated bibliography through a quantitative analysis, in which (3) bibliometric and (4) content analysis techniques were employed. To our knowledge, the combination of these two methods, bibliometric and content analyses, as an intentional precursor for making socio-historical observations has not been done before and certainly not within the area of martial arts research 3 .Next, more detail about the whole process is given. term avoids the polysemy of the term skills -which could also refer to physical, mental or emotional skills -, and unifies the cited terms for avoiding synonymy.Once the references were completed, the database was then organised into 17 categories of monographs, 10 of these categories were further subcategorised, creating a total of 33 subcategories. The process followed for organis...
