Research based teaching approach in introductory physics curses at university: seven years of experience and resultsSummary. The objective of this work is to present the results of an educational innovation in fi rst year physics based on a oriented research teaching approach. This model has been presented in different previous works and is based on the idea that learning and teaching of sciences can be developed as a process of (re)constructing knowledge in a context which is inspired by scientifi c research and guided by the teaching staff. This innovation has been done in two Engineering Schools in the University of the Basque Country. The results from several years of didactic innovation are presented and compared with those obtained from the usual teaching style in the same Schools. The innovation provides evidence that a teaching method which encompasses concepts, procedures and attitudes can produce better results in learning physics in the fi rst year at university.
Compared to traditional instruction on solving problems, this article is proposing a methodology known as «problem solving by developing guided research» which is framed within the wide range of problem solving proposals in Inquiry-Based Problem Solving. This article firstly aims to investigate how implementing a problem solving strategy based on developing guided research can help students to improve their skills in scientific methodology procedures to solve problems. Secondly, it aims to provide evidence of improvements in problem solving within experimental groups compared to groups of students following traditional teaching and thirdly, to explore the effect of the problem solving proposal on students' attitudes. Evidence is provided from the results of implementing this methodology among first year university engineering students.Keywords.
