Summary. The work we present here is an attempt to recapitulate the main research studies carried out within the field of stationary magnetic field. The objective of these studies is to find out the main deficiencies produced in learning the concepts inherent to the mentioned area of Physics. We expect this collection of studies will help those teachers interested in the subject in their first approach to students problematic conceptions or, at least, to those problematic conceptions studied within the context of Physics Education.
Research based teaching approach in introductory physics curses at university: seven years of experience and resultsSummary. The objective of this work is to present the results of an educational innovation in fi rst year physics based on a oriented research teaching approach. This model has been presented in different previous works and is based on the idea that learning and teaching of sciences can be developed as a process of (re)constructing knowledge in a context which is inspired by scientifi c research and guided by the teaching staff. This innovation has been done in two Engineering Schools in the University of the Basque Country. The results from several years of didactic innovation are presented and compared with those obtained from the usual teaching style in the same Schools. The innovation provides evidence that a teaching method which encompasses concepts, procedures and attitudes can produce better results in learning physics in the fi rst year at university.
Magnetic fi eld: design and evaluation of teaching strategies based on learning as oriented researchSummary. The aim of this study is to analyse students' ideas about the nature of the magnetic fi eld. We have assumed that a signifi cant knowledge of the source of magnetic fi eld is a basic prerequisite when students are to reason about electromagnetic phenomena. In order to analyse students' explanations we have taken into account the fact that individual build mental representations to help them understand the functioning of a physic system. These mental representations include different explanatory categories of reality in one same individual depending on the context and the contents concerned. Therefore, we have designed an open-question questionnaire with emphasis on explanations so as to analyse the students' reasoning. The results found seem to confi rm that students do have serious diffi culties in learning the theory of magnetic fi eld.
