Industry 4.0 encompasses technologies that generate valuable insights from large data exchange networks. This, along with the growing digitalization of organizational information and knowledge, turns these assets into a valuable resource for product and process improvement and optimization. In this context, Knowledge-based Engineering (KBE) is presented as a way to efficiently capture and reuse organizational knowledge. As such, this work conceptualizes the Digital Twin, emerging technology as a KBE enabling application that employs organizational knowledge as the driving force behind product development. To this end, power transformer development is used as a case study.
This paper presents the development criteria and implementation steps of a Corporate System of Information on Safety and Environment ("Sistema Corporativo de Informações de Segurança e Meio Ambiente" - SISIN) implemented in PETROBRAS - Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. as a strategic management tool. The system in reference involves some 40 units, including main offices and operating units, encompassing a universe of 35,000 (May/2001) employees of the Company, almost 60,000 Contracted employees and totals 70,000 records approximately in the period from 1985 to 2001 (May), including records of accidents resulting in personal injuries and records of incidents. The engineering adopted for the development of the data bank employed the concepts recommended in the ISO-9000 series Quality rules, with reference to a wider application of the definition of "non conformity". The criteria set forth in the Brazilian Standard of Accident Recordings NBR-14.280, issued by the Brazilian Technical Standards Association ("Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas" - ABNT) were also taken into consideration, as well as the international rules on which the charts included in the System were based. The purpose of this paper is to evidence the managerial importance of an Information System of such dimensions, since the basic assumptions adopted for its development, such as the processing speed of data input, data availability in real time, concepts and national and international indicators were employed and are strategically necessary within a globalization scenario, in which information quality and productivity are increasingly needed elements, as well as fundamental factors of corporate survival. 1. Introduction The current technological evolution constantly results in the improvement and development of new products. Due to the creation and development of these new products, managers have been increasingly bound to make decisions in a very short term. Companies are currently demanding better managerial performance regarding decision making. In general, the instructions and guidelines issued to managers by the directors of any company have the purpose of rendering pre-established goals operative, and affect an increasing diversity of products, with shorter terms to make the correct decision, smaller production lots, but with irreproachable quality and a high level of reliability. The result is a better return on investment, either due to automation, or to the introduction of new technologies to processing and materials, so as to render cost cutting feasible, in order to face local and foreign competitors. Other contributing factors are the greater flexibility of managerial programs, minimization of inventories and capital costs, and personnel satisfaction. The company whose managers are able to administrate these apparently conflicting demands shall certainly be in an exceedingly advantageous strategic position. A manufacturing system which is able to rapidly adjust its programs, produce new products, take advantage from new technologies, and manufacture a greater variety of products using limited facilities shall be a formidable competitive weapon.
