Considering that sensilla constitute important functional elements of sensory systems in insects, the aim of this study was to determine the type and distribution of sensilla in the antennae of Hylamorpha elegans Burmeister examined by scanning electron microscopy. Hylamorpha elegans antennae are lamellate and consist of the scape, pedicel, and flagellum. The antennal club of this beetle consists of three terminal plates: proximal, middle, and distal lamellae. Four types of sensilla were observed in the lamellae from both sexes: sensilla trichoidea, chaetica, coeloconica, and placodea. Antennal length was larger in males than in females, and significant sexual variation in the number of sensilla placodea and sensilla coeloconica was observed.
A new species, Megasoma nogueirai sp. nov., from tropical subdeciduous forests at 290–820 m of altitude in Sinaloa, northwestern Mexico, is described and illustrated. Differences with M. elephas (F.) and M. occidentalis Bolívar, Jiménez and Martínez, are outlined.
The third-instar larva and pupa of the shining leaf chafer, Chrysophora chrysochlora (Latr.), from Cauca, Colombia, are described for the first time. Illustrations of diagnostic structures, modifications in the key to the larvae of the genera of Rutelini in the New World, and data on the biology and distribution of C. chrysochlora in Colombia are included.
Third-instar larvae of Phyllophaga (s.str.) ilhuicaminai Morón and Phyllophaga (Listrochelus) cuicateca Morón and Aragón are described. Larvae of P. ilhuicaminai were taken only from the roots of Limonium sinuatum (L.) Miller (Plumbaginaceae), an ornamental herb growing in fields near Atlixco, Puebla, Mexico. Larvae of P. cuicateca were found only on roots of Amaranthus hypocondriacus L. (Amaranthaceae) in fields near Altepexi, Puebla, Mexico. These larvae cause damage to the root system of both plant species under culture. Illustrations of diagnostic structures, a brief discussion on the differences between these larvae and other Phyllophaga Harris larvae, and a key to the Mexican larvae of the genus are included.
