Neste texto, abordarei primeiramente o estado da questão identitária da perspectiva da antropologia hoje e, em seguida, farei uma reflexão sobre os processos culturais contemporâneos. Por um lado, a mundialização coloca em questão, pelo acesso maciço aos transportes e às comunicações, as fronteiras territoriais locais e a relação entre lugares e identidades. Por outro, a circulação rápida das informações, das ideologias e das imagens acarreta dissociações entre lugares e culturas. Nesse quadro, os sentimentos de perda de identidade são compensados pela procura ou criação de novos contextos e retóricas identitárias. Híbrida ou mestiça, como se diz agora, a cultura encontra-se assim mais dominada do que nunca pela problemática da identidade, que se enuncia cada vez mais como uma "identidade cultural". Farei a crítica dessa concepção mostrando, inversamente, a emergência das "culturas identitárias" em um contexto de globalização acelerada das situações locais.Subjacente a toda essa reflexão, encontra-se a questão do papel dos antropólogos em um domínio que parece tê-los concernido sempre -o da cultura e da identidade -e que, ao mesmo tempo, por diversas vezes já colocou em evidência (durante as colonizações do século XIX ou depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial) certas falhas de sua intervenção. Hoje em dia, a reflexão deveria se concentrar em definir o lugar a partir do qual pode ser construída essa crí ti ca da identidade cultural , que proponho como horizonte da pesquisa. Esse lugar do antropólogo pode ser definido de duas maneiras: primeiro, é claro, como lugar social negociado na situação de investigação a partir da qual se pode conceber o engajamento crí -tico do pesquisador, como expus alhures (Agier 1997a;1997b); em seguida, como lugar intelectual, no sentido de que o antropólogo tem necessidade, hoje em dia, de ferramentas teóricas atualizadas para dar conta da relação contemporânea entre identidade e cultura. Este último ponto constitui o objeto do presente texto.
Para introduzir esta reflexão, eu devo dizer logo de saída que o vínculo que será estabelecido aqui entre etnografia das margens e antropologia da cidade não pretende reproduzir a oposição radical ou mesmo "ontológica" entre a marginalidade e a centralidade em si. Muito ao contrário, eu pretendo descrever uma dinâmica, uma dialética, uma relação necessária e, por fim, certa continuidade entre uma e outra. Mais profundamente, eu desejo implementar um método que permita pensar a universalidade da cidade fora de qualquer pretensão normativa, ou seja, segundo uma concepção ao mesmo tempo epistemológica e política. Baseada em pesquisa etnográfica urbana, esta concepção defende a ideia de uma construção/ desconstrução de seu objeto "cidade", rejeitando qualquer definição a priori da mesma enquanto ferramenta analítica. A questão seria antes: o que faz e desfaz a cidade permanentemente? Ela conduz à divulgação de processos e portanto à política que impulsiona o movimento necessário à sua existência, às suas reprodução e transformação.A cidade é um "objeto virtual", escrevia Henri Lefebvre em Le droit à la ville, no início de 1968 (Lefebvre 2009:97). Esta afirmação foi em seguida verificada, indiretamente, na constatação de que o urbano ultrapassava a cidade: o filósofo, por extrapolação da cidade existente, antecipava o nascimento de uma sociedade "completamente urbana" tanto quanto planetária (Lefebvre 1970). Isto conferiu mais força teórica e política à ideia de uma virtualidade da cidade. Mais recentemente, o geógrafo David Harvey observava, após Lefebvre, que o "direito à cidade" aponta no fundo para "alguma coisa que já não existe"; é um "significante vazio", ele escreve, "tudo depende de quem lhe conferirá sentido" (Harvey 2011:42). Como em eco, podemos observar que os atores dos movimentos sociais desta última década, que reclamam o "direito à cidade", não leram necessariamente a obra de Henry Lefebvre... mas fizeram deste apelo um horizonte de sua *

Unidos forneceram o espetáculo, em todas as telas do planeta, de uma visão extremamente maniqueísta e, no entanto, exata do que é hoje sua concepção de associação entre a guerra e o humanitário. O acontecimento global da intervenção americana no Afeganistão, apresentada como resposta aos atentados de 11 de setembro de 2001, mostrou a perfeita simultaneidade entre uma ofensiva guerreira que então se pretendia a mais rápida, circunscrita e eficaz possível, mas que na prática revelou-se longa e bem menos "limpa" que o que fora anunciado, e uma intervenção humanitária que deveria vir em auxílio às populações civis direta ou indiretamente atingidas pela ofensiva: víveres e medicamentos lançados sobre as zonas bombardeadas, mas também abertura, no Paquistão, de mais de 75 novos sítios do ACNUR 1 ao longo da fronteira, mobilização urgente de mil agentes do ACNUR, construção de dezenas de campos onde abrigar os refugiados afegãos, fornecimento de 80 mil tendas, milhares de cobertores etc. Mas o Paquistão, que já acolhera mais de 2 milhões de exilados afegãos, fechou suas fronteiras, dando a entender que não poderia mais recebê-losatitude hoje cada vez mais adotada pelos países, seguindo o exemplo, na época, do Irã, outro país vizinho ao Afeganistão.
