Research has become an integral part of learning. Thus, students’ capabilities of doing research need to be strengthened. The study aimed to determine the difficulties of students at Sorsogon State College, Philippines-School of Graduate Students which may serve as a basis for an intervention program. Respondents in this study are the 93 students who have taken Research Methodology subject at SSC School of Graduate Studies. It utilized the descriptive-developmental research design. Data gathering was primarily done through survey questionnaire and supplemented with unstructured interview and focus group discussion. Descriptive statistics was utilized to summarize the data. Results showed that the respondents encountered much difficulty in conceptualizing a research problem/ title, looking for and reviewing related literature and studies, determining the correct research methodology and procedures to be used, determining the appropriate statistical tools, gathering the data, and analyzing and interpreting the data. Among the factors identified which hinder them from doing research are heavy teaching loads, lack of motivation and commitment, and financial constraints. There are interventions that are proposed to enhance the students’ capabilities in conducting quality researches.
The advancement of online information system allows every internet user to have ample amount of data that they can gather without acknowledging the authors. Thus, the awareness of anti-plagiarism tools whether it is free-online services or commercial software can help both students and faculty to properly acknowledge and identify the source of the data. This study intended to compare and contrast the efficiency and other cited criteria for the available free-online plagiarism detection system. The seven free-of-cost online services on plagiarism detection software that were identified during the time of testing were Plagiarism Checker, Plagiarism Detection, Check for Plagiarism, PlagTracker, PlagScan, DupliChecker and PaperRater. The seven tools had been tested with the textual data that had been derived from numerous websites which includes educational institutions and open access journals. The strong and weak points of each tool were validated by allowing the respondents to use each tool and rate it according to the cited criteria. Among the tools tested, the Plagiarism Checker turned out to be easiest tool to use with the highest rate of learnability due to simplicity of its user interface. The ability of its online services to cross-check other internet sites regardless of the file format where the tested textual data that had been copied gives a more reliable output than the others. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency level of the Tri-fold Instructional Model, a holistic system approach in teaching and learning General Psychology. Its key components: the CD-ROM “General Psychology” Module, online collaboration through the internet and Small-Group Discussions (SGDs) were used in a sample of Information Technology class of Sorsogon State College, Magallanes Campus. The researchers made use of validation techniques and assessments employing descriptive, developmental and quasiexperimental methods in a one-group pretest-posttest design. As an innovative instructional tool, the was very much accepted and proven efficient in enhancing mastery learning of students taking the course. There was a significant difference from the previously fair performance of the students as compared to the excellent performance level after the intervention. Teaching, learning and technology therefore work together for efficient knowledge transfer. The Tri-fold Instructional Model as a holistic systems approach is a key to effective instruction. Gauging the students’ learning styles, proper planning of the course content and effective use of technology tools are instruments to successful teaching- learning process. The presence of vast communication and information nowadays necessitates the need for a system to readily access and transfer data. The study aimed to develop records archiving and document repository to overcome the barrier of server client method of deploying the documents from one place to another and easier data access to its stakeholders. The Sorsogon State College in the Philippines has four campuses which are located strategically in four municipalities of Sorsogon province. Their distance from each other sometimes causes a problem particularly along communication and real time updates. General User Interface (GUI) of the application has been built on top of all web-enabled computers and even to the mobile devices, so it requires only installed web browsers to render the GUI onto their devices regardless of its platform and specifications. The installation of web-based archiving and repository on its main campus enables satellite campuses to connect to the college private server in a cost-effective manner through virtual private network that connects on top of the Internet service provider. This study overcomes the vulnerability of security by means of allowing user credentials to login at the private server using a 1024 bit Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) private/public key exchange and 256-bit Advance Encryption System (AES) encryption through its virtual private network. Contents of the uploaded files were being encrypted at 128-bit to prevent intranet users from sneaking the file contents. Admission testing is an integral part of higher education institutions (HEIs) in maintaining the quality educational standards. Through testing, the HEI’s can objectively select applicants that are likely to succeed in their intended course. The study was conducted to determine the predictive validity of the admission Tests of the secondary and college levels to their performance in English subjects using the descriptive-correlational designs. The respondents were the secondary students of the SSC Laboratory High School and First-Year college students from school years 2009-2012. The Pearson Correlation was used to determine the relationship of the admission test results and the performance of the identified respondents on the English subject. The GPA on English and SSC Admission test results on college level shows a moderate positive relationship. Also, high school level denotes a strong positive relationship. This relationship had been manifested in 40% of the respondents in secondary level, and 13% of the respondents in college level. This significant relationship suggests that admission test determines the potential performance of the students in their English subject in both secondary and tertiary level. Thus, it was concluded that SSC Admission Test is a valid predictor of the students’ performance in English subject.
