Research has become an integral part of learning. Thus, students’ capabilities of doing research need to be strengthened. The study aimed to determine the difficulties of students at Sorsogon State College, Philippines-School of Graduate Students which may serve as a basis for an intervention program. Respondents in this study are the 93 students who have taken Research Methodology subject at SSC School of Graduate Studies. It utilized the descriptive-developmental research design. Data gathering was primarily done through survey questionnaire and supplemented with unstructured interview and focus group discussion. Descriptive statistics was utilized to summarize the data. Results showed that the respondents encountered much difficulty in conceptualizing a research problem/ title, looking for and reviewing related literature and studies, determining the correct research methodology and procedures to be used, determining the appropriate statistical tools, gathering the data, and analyzing and interpreting the data. Among the factors identified which hinder them from doing research are heavy teaching loads, lack of motivation and commitment, and financial constraints. There are interventions that are proposed to enhance the students’ capabilities in conducting quality researches.
Environmental services are integral to basic Social Sciences. This is a descriptive developmental research aimed to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of LGU Sorsogon City in the delivery of environmental services as a basis in designing a collaborative extension program. The respondents were 206 local officials and 394 residents/constituents of selected communities of Sorsogon City. A validated researcher-made questionnaire was the instrument used in data gathering. Frequency count, percentage and weighted means were used to analyze the data. Results revealed that solid waste collection was the top environmental program being delivered by LGU Sorsogon City as perceived by the two groups of respondents, followed by solid waste generation, tree planting and water shed reserve maintenance. Other environment services which received high frequencies were solid waste transfer and transport, sea and river guard, water pollution control and forest guard and illegal logging control. The delivery of services and facilities was rated as moderately efficient and effective by both the constituents and local officials of Sorsogon City. From this result, a collaborative extension program was designed to mitigate climate change in Sorsogon City. The study primarily aims to determine the responsiveness of the Sorsogon State College School of Graduate Studies and its graduates to community needs. The respondents are 59 graduates for SY 2002 to 2007 and 29 employers. Data was taken using documentary analysis, survey questionnaire and unstructured interview. Statistical tools were frequency counts, percentage and mean. Results revealed that 44% of the respondents are employed at DepEd, 36% are with SUCs, 15% are with the LGUs while 5% are employed at private HEIs. Most have been promoted after earning a master’s degree. Findings also showed that the SGS are responsive to the various stakeholders in the community along the VMGO and curricular offerings. Along research, the graduates have limited researches, but these are very much congruent to the needs of the clients. Along professional development, the graduates performed their functions very satisfactorily. Moreover, they also respond to the community as speakers and members of various organizations and participate actively in various projects and activities. Admission testing is an integral part of higher education institutions (HEIs) in maintaining the quality educational standards. Through testing, the HEI’s can objectively select applicants that are likely to succeed in their intended course. The study was conducted to determine the predictive validity of the admission Tests of the secondary and college levels to their performance in English subjects using the descriptive-correlational designs. The respondents were the secondary students of the SSC Laboratory High School and First-Year college students from school years 2009-2012. The Pearson Correlation was used to determine the relationship of the admission test results and the performance of the identified respondents on the English subject. The GPA on English and SSC Admission test results on college level shows a moderate positive relationship. Also, high school level denotes a strong positive relationship. This relationship had been manifested in 40% of the respondents in secondary level, and 13% of the respondents in college level. This significant relationship suggests that admission test determines the potential performance of the students in their English subject in both secondary and tertiary level. Thus, it was concluded that SSC Admission Test is a valid predictor of the students’ performance in English subject.
This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency level of the Tri-fold Instructional Model, a holistic system approach in teaching and learning General Psychology. Its key components: the CD-ROM “General Psychology” Module, online collaboration through the internet and Small-Group Discussions (SGDs) were used in a sample of Information Technology class of Sorsogon State College, Magallanes Campus. The researchers made use of validation techniques and assessments employing descriptive, developmental and quasiexperimental methods in a one-group pretest-posttest design. As an innovative instructional tool, the was very much accepted and proven efficient in enhancing mastery learning of students taking the course. There was a significant difference from the previously fair performance of the students as compared to the excellent performance level after the intervention. Teaching, learning and technology therefore work together for efficient knowledge transfer. The Tri-fold Instructional Model as a holistic systems approach is a key to effective instruction. Gauging the students’ learning styles, proper planning of the course content and effective use of technology tools are instruments to successful teaching- learning process. Indigenous practices are part of people’s life and culture. In Sorsogon province, Philippines, numerous indigenous practices are observed, but only few are documented. This study delved specifically on documenting the eco-friendly indigenous farming practices on seed preservation and storage, land preparation, fertilization, crop protection and organic farming. This descriptive research utilized surveys, interviews, and observation. Respondents are farmers with ages 55 to 75 coming from rural communities in Sorsogon province. Among the eco-friendly practices on seed preservation and storage include placing unthreshed seeds above wood-burning stoves or hanging them in smoky areas of the kitchen until the next planting season. Rice are preserved by air-drying and mixing them with leaves like kilala, alagao (Premna odorata), lagundi (Vitex negundo), or charcoal. Spraying with achuete (Biya orellana) leaf extract or powdered fruits of siling labuyo (Capsicum frutescens) is also practiced. To protect crops from insect infestation, farmers collect, grind and spread rice bugs in the field to make the soil fertile. Dead animals are buried near the tree. These gathered alternative farming practices could contribute to the global concern of mitigating climate change. However, with the influx of modern technology, these practices may be forgotten if not documented and advocated.
