This article describes a field study conducted to test a conceptual model on situational determinants of networking behavior. The findings indicated support for a new measure of internal and external networking behavior. Consistent with our model, external networking was affected by managerial function and level, but internal networking was affected only by managerial level. Dependencies partially mediated the effects of managerial function and level on networking behaviors. The amount of dependency on different types of network members also varied by level and function. However, the reasons given by managers for dependency on key network members were similar for internal and external networks. Rate of advancement for managers was predicted weakly by their internal and external networking.
Many aspects of the immune maturation are uncharted. For ordinary human autoimmune systems there are no complete descriptions of the progression from an initial antigenic epitope to a maximally complex immune response. In this study we have exploited a large serial collection of human sera to investigate the development of the anti-Sm autoimmune response in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The results suggest a similar, if not virtually identical, stepwise progression in the early humoral immune maturation of anti-Sm. The amino acid sequence PPPGMRPP comprises the first epitope in the anti-Sm B/B'response and its close relative, PPPGMRGP, the second. Epitopes are subsequently enlarged by the incorporation of neighbouring amino acids. The third and fourth epitopes are also recognised by an antibody in a nearly identical sequence in different lupus patients. A column absorption with PPPGMRPP demonstrates that the epitope spreading among the first four early epitopes appears to occur by the sequential generation of cross-reactive antibodies. Unexpectedly, epitope spreading in this system occurs in a predictable fashion by involving essentially the same sequence of antigenic structures from person to person. In addition, these data support the lupus anti-Sm antibodies originating against a single antigenic structure and, hence, strongly support a unifying mechanism in the generation of these autoantibodies.
The paper empirically examines the dynamic relationship between financial development and economic growth in Australia in terms of bank-based and market-based financial structure. A time-series approach using the VAR Model is used to provide evidence for the dynamic relationship. The paper provides empirical evidence on the causal impact of the financial market on the economic growth of the Australian economy. The results suggest that financial intermediaries and financial markets have different impacts on economic growth given their diverse roles in the domestic economy. In particular there is evidence of causality from economic growth to the development of the financial intermediaries. On the other hand, development in the financial markets causes economic growth but there is no evidence of any causality from economic growth to financial markets. The sensitivity test using different interest rates does not change the results. Copyright Springer-Verlag 2004Financial markets, financial intermediaries, economic growth, vector autoregression,
A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the long-term results of bilateral alveolar bone grafting carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital from 1983 to 1993. Fifty-five consecutive complete bilateral cleft lip and palate patients (36 males and 19 females) who had the operation were included in this study. The total number of cleft sites was 110. At the time of alveolar bone grafting, the mean age of the patients was 12.3 years with a range of 8.4-19.9 years. Cancellous bone from the iliac crest was grafted into the alveolar cleft areas. The cleft sites were studied in two groups according to whether the cleft canine had erupted prior to bone grafting or not. The erupted canine group was composed of 43 cleft sites and the unerupted canine group of 67 sites. At the time of this study, the cleft canine had subsequently erupted at 101 sites. Anterior occlusal radiographs were taken before and after bone grafting. The minimum period of observation after alveolar bone grafting was one year. Criteria described previously were utilized to assess the height of the interdental septum. The results show that bone grafting before canine eruption has a higher clinical success rate compared with that carried out after canine eruption. The critical variable affecting the quality of bilateral alveolar bone grafting is the timing of the surgery.
The aim of this study was to examine the latitudinal variation in preadult competitive ability of Drosophila melanogaster. Two pairs of populations from Queensland and Tasmania, Australia, were examined. Queensland flies are genetically smaller and develop more slowly than the Tasmanian flies. Survival and body size of flies raised at different temperatures and densities were compared when larvae were challenged with a common competitor. No latitudinal variation in larval survival was detected. Body size (measured as wing length) decreased with increasing temperature and larval density. Flies from the Tasmanian populations were more sensitive to the effects of temperature and density and to the joint effect of increased temperature and density. This could explain the evolution of greater growth efficiency and larger body size at lower temperatures.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
