AbstractPurpose -Wear in journal bearings occurs when the operating conditions (high load, high temperature, low angular velocity or low viscosity), downgrade the ability of the bearing to carry load. The wear depth increases because the rotor comes in contact with the bearing surface. Wear in journal bearings affects their characteristics because of its influence on the thickness of the fluid film. This influence can be detected in the dynamic behavior of the rotor and especially in the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach -In this paper, the effect of wear on the rotor dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients (K and C) of a short journal bearing is investigated. K and C in this work are estimated by using two methods a semi-analytical method and finite element (FE) analysis implemented in the ANSYS software. Findings -The main goal of this research is to make the identification of wear in journal bearings feasible by observing the alternation of their dynamic coefficients. Both of the methods implemented are proven to be useful, while FE analysis can provide more accurate results. Originality/value -This paper is original and has not been published elsewhere.
The architecture of the electrical actuation module driving a magnetic-hydraulic bearing system is presented. The bearing is intended to be scaled for use in applications of all sizes in industries like shipboard for support of the engine-propeller shaft or in power-plants for the shaft through which the prime mover, e.g. steam or gas turbine, is driving the electric generator. The benefits of this new bearing is first and foremost its superb performance in terms of low down to practically no friction losses since there is no direct contact between the supporting bearing surface and the rotating shaft supported. Other benefits include the potential of active, inline, real-time balancing and alignment. To implement such concept of a magnetic-hydraulic bearing, the following tasks need to be carried out. First, identification of mechanical, electrodynamical and circuit properties of the bearing’s electromagnets in the system is necessary. Toward such identification, a series of experiments needed to be carried out. To be able to carry out these experiments, a specific power electronic converter is developed to drive each electromagnet. The power electronic drive is a quad MOSFET circuit based on full-bridge converter topology and outfitted with appropriate sensory instrumentation to collect and record measurements of all the physical variables of interest. Special care has been taken to compensate for magnetic hysteresis of the electromagnets, mitigate any induction heating effects and maintain operation within the material’s linear region i.e. without significant saturation occurring. The use of a power transistor bridge allows rapid changes to be applied on the electromagnet’s load force which could compensate disturbance or misalignment developed on the shaft supported. The data series from these experiments are useful for formulating a possibly nonlinear model of the electromagnetical and electromechanical processes involved in the bearing’s operation. Such a model can then be employed to help design a digital microcontroller system which could effectively drive the power electronics and electromagnets to perform their required tasks as part of the bearing. Besides, the model could also be used for the synthesis of the nonlinear, sampled-data (discrete-time) control law which will be programmed on the microcontroller system board.
A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control model of an active hydromagnetic journal bearing (AHJB) is presented here and its design guidelines are explicitly described. The nonlinear rotor equations of motion, is introduced. Then, the linearization of these equations in the bearing specific equilibrium point is performed and presented along with the appropriate PID gains. Consequentially, the linear equation is transformed via Laplace method and the control model of the AHJB is finally developed. The multiphysics module of Ansys is used to calculate the forces that the hydrodynamic lubrication applies to the rotor, in every position of the rotor, during its movement inside the bearing. This has been done, in order not to have linear equations of the hydrodynamic forces, but the real, nonlinear equations. The nonlinear equations are used for the electromagnetic forces too. The Matlab software is used to simulate the components that the AHJB is consisted of. The P, I, and D gains are the obtained results of this simulations, which are produced via robust control method, in single-input-single-output tool module. Finally, the Simulink module of Matlab is energized to check the control characteristics of the developed AHJB system, taking into account the nonlinear equations of motion of the system, in combination with the rotor unbalance and gyroscopic effects and the saturation of the coils. The rotor response, the overshoot, the rotor center vibration are controlled using the above produced P, I, and D gains. Several plots are constructed and presented, such as the rotor orbits, to show the possibility of the AHJB control.
