This investigation studied interior design and architecture education with respect to their specialized and shared knowledge areas (KAs). Education, formalized via accreditation requirements, is available to both disciplines. KAs within discipline-specific accreditation requirements content were identified, categorized, and then compared to differentiate the specialized, parallel, and shared knowledge gained by students graduating from accredited programs. The findings of this study could contribute to the dialog about what makes interior design and architecture unique professions.
The initiation of a new Ph.D. programme in the twentyfirst-century university requires foresight, strategic planning and, often, a commitment to an interdisciplinary format which capitalizes on shared resources across related disciplines. This paper documents the challenges of initiating
and starting an interdisciplinary doctoral programme in environmental planning and design. Differences exist between the classic US doctorate and the UK model. A case study example is presented, based on the author's experiences in launching an interdisciplinary doctorate at Arizona State
University. This paper may be of value to multi-disciplinary, cross-disciplinary, or interdisciplinary colleges or schools that are developing, or considering developing, research-based interdisciplinary doctoral programmes in art and design.
This paper summarizes the purposes, procedures and results of the Environmental Design Research Project conducted at the Arizona State Hospital. This research was conducted to identify important attributes that influence the design of mental hospital treatment units, assess staff perception of these attributes, and confirm resident activities on existing wards. The field research was conducted to provide an empirical basis for the development of a performance‐based design guide for designing new, or modifying existing, treatment units.
Environmental control, health safety and welfare, maintenance, and staff control attributes were rated “most useful” in the staff's evaluation. Personalization, orientation, and activity‐related attributes seemed less critical, according to staff. In addition, observation research confirmed the activity patterns of elderly residents on two of the hospital treatment units.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
