NORTHWESTERN UNIV13RSITYT HE RORSCHACH method of personality examination has gained wide recognition in the field of clinical psychology, but for the most part has yet to gain the whole hearted acceptance of the academic and experimental psychologist Major criticism of Rorschach has centered! around the problem of validation [17]. The Rorschach purports to measure personality, and herein lies the frustrating barrier to validation. The task of validation becomes the task of selecting suitable criteria of personality. We feel as Beck [4] and others [1] that the most meaningful approach is by an "operational" criterion in which not only the definition of the concept of personality itself but also of its component processes is in terms of constructs of actual behavior. In her review of protective methods, Sargent [21] outlines three proposed methods of investigating validity. Briefly these are (a) correspondence with other criteria, (b) internal consistency, and (c) predictive success. Hertz [15] suggests four general approaches: namely, (a)'directexperimentation, (b) comparison with independent, objective criteria, (c) comparison with extensive individual case studies, and (d) comparison with known diagnoses and clinical 1 The writer wishes to express his appreciation to Dr.
The present paper presents an experimental investigation of the clinical diagnostic potentialities of the CVS scale (see ^W22:^n 3032). This scale consists of Comprehension and Similarities from the Wechsler-Bellevue scale and a 15-word Vocabulary list proposed by Thorndike. Experimental evidence shows that CVS exhibits some sensitivity to "deterioration" through a measure of interest scatter based on the discrepancy between vocabulary performance and that on comprehension and similarities. The test also performs satisfactorily as a screen test for mental deficiency.
