The R-SPQ-2F is an instrument used in many studies to measure learning approaches. However, its internal structure is still a matter of debate. It is important to confirm its underlying structure in order to find out which variables are being measured with it. A survey method is used with 279 students of the Faculty of Education at the University of León, and alternative models found in the literature are compared using covariance structure analysis, specifically, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). We conclude that the structure that best fits the data is a two-factor structure in line with the results obtained in other studies. Future research should take these two primary factors into account when interpreting their findings. Solutions are also offered for improving the scale with the original 20 items.
Learning styles. Differences by gender, course and qualification ABSTRACTDespite the volume of research on learning styles no conclusive results about the influence of gender, course or field of knowledge has been find. While some studies point out differences due to gender, specialty courses or training, other research concludes that these differences are nonexistent or insignificant. This paper tries to understand the role of these variables in learning styles. A sample of 805 college students measured learning styles by CHAEA, and discusses the effect of gender, course and field of knowledge considering the effects univariate and multivariate. Data analysis can be concluded that all analyzed variables produce differences in styles, although the trends of simple tests should be qualified with the results of multivariate analysis.
Previous research has shown the influence of approaches to learning on performance, with a deep approach generally associated with higher quality learning, and a surface approach with lower levels of performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms involved in this relationship by studying the modulating role of time spent on learning tasks. A longitudinal study with a survey format lasting fifteen weeks was carried out. 187 university students took part in the study. The data on approaches were gathered with the Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) in Spanish. The results from path analysis confirmed that approaches to learning do influence performance. A surface approach yields a direct effect that is linked to worse results. This paper discusses the relevance of these results and the need for further research on the variables that may influence this relationship.
In the present study the relationship between perception of free time and leisure and approaches to learning of university students was analyzed. A survey was carried out in which 210 students of Nursing Studies of the University of León (Spain) took part. The starting hypothesis was that students who predominantly use a deep approach would believe to have less leisure time than those with a more superficial approach, due to the competitive nature of both activities. We used the Free Time and Leisure survey (ETLO in Spanish) and the limited version of two factors (R-CPE-2F) of the Processes of Study questionnaire to collect data. The results supported the proposed hypothesis; there were gender differences both in the use of free time and in approaches to learning. The results are discussed in this article and guidelines are given for practical application.
