Marianismo is a Latino cultural value that describes both positive and negative aspects of traditional Latina femininity. Marianismo emphasizes culturally valued qualities such as interpersonal harmony, inner strength, self-sacrifice, and morality. Endorsement of marianismo is hypothesized to correlate with individual economic, educational, and personal variables. Marianismo also is theorized to potentially influence attitudes about, experiences of, and responses to intimate partner violence (IPV) among Latina women. The present study examined whether endorsement of marianismo beliefs mitigated or exacerbated psychological distress after experiences of IPV in a sample of 205 recently immigrated Latina women, aged 18 to 23 years. Latina women experiencing higher levels of IPV and endorsing greater marianismo beliefs were hypothesized to indicate greater psychological distress. Unexpectedly, women who endorsed more Subordinate to Others/ Self-Silencing to Maintain Harmony marianismo beliefs indicated more psychological distress ( p = .05), greater symptoms of psychological distress ( p = .01), and greater average distress ( p = .03) when they also reported less IPV than peers. Implications for understanding Latinas' responses to and reporting of IPV, as well as for culturally tailored counseling interventions for this underserved and understudied population, are discussed.

Evidence-based methods of screening for and intervening with substance use are necessary to improve mental health treatment for the millions of individuals who use substances, yet practitioners rarely received training in these methods. Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice that provides practitioners with a set of skills and standard method for screening and providing early intervention for risky substance use. The present study implemented and evaluated a 2-part SBIRT training program for 87 students in mental health counseling, clinical, counseling, and school psychology graduate programs at 1 institution. We evaluated students' satisfaction with the training as well as the impact of the training on students' knowledge of motivational interviewing (MI) and SBIRT and self-efficacy to implement SBIRT. We also evaluated whether completion of a booster training would increase knowledge, self-efficacy, and clinical practices beyond gains observed from the initial training. A pre-, post-, and 30-day follow-up repeated-measures design was used to assess changes in MI and SBIRT knowledge, SBIRT self-efficacy, and use of SBIRT skills. Results suggest that a 2-part SBIRT training program delivered to counselors in training can increase their knowledge of MI and SBIRT as well as their self-efficacy to deliver SBIRT. The overwhelming majority of students were satisfied with the training and found it to be relevant and useful. In response to calls for training mental health professionals to work with substance-using clients, results indicate the SBIRT training model can advance this effort. Public Significance StatementMost people in need of substance use treatment in the United States do not receive it. Screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment is an effective method for identifying and providing early intervention to those with substance use disorders. Findings from this study indicate that a face-toface and online booster training increase health service psychology trainees' screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment knowledge, self-efficacy, and use of the skills in practice.

The stress process model of caregiving posits that caregivers' internal psychosocial resources may serve as buffers between the stress associated with caregiving and well‐being. Empirical support for the stress process model exists for several caregiving contexts, but little research has investigated the Parkinson's disease caregiving experience in Mexico. Using a cross‐sectional, correlational design, the objective of this study was to examine whether resilience moderates the relation between perceived stress and health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) among Parkinson's disease caregivers in Mexico. Data were collected from April 2015 to February 2016 during outpatient neurology appointments in Mexico City, Mexico. Participants included informal caregivers (N = 95) for a family member with Parkinson's disease. Participants completed a battery of questionnaires assessing their level of perceived stress, resilience, and HRQOL. Regression analyses indicated that resilience moderated the inverse relation between perceived stress and mental HRQOL. However, contrary to hypotheses, resilience did not moderate the relation between stress and physical HRQOL. Findings shed light on resilience as a potential protective factor for mental HRQOL among Parkinson's disease caregivers in Mexico and indicate that resilience may be beneficial to target in mental health promotion interventions.

Associations between theorized sociocultural factors and acculturative stress were examined among Latina immigrants (aged 18-23 years) during their initial months in the US. Participants' quantity of alcohol use was hypothesized to be linked with more acculturative stress. Using respondent-driven sampling, 530 Latinas who recently immigrated to Miami-Dade County, Florida, were recruited from community activities, Latino health fairs, advertisements at community agencies, and online postings. A path analysis revealed associations between acculturative stress and more time in the US and greater commitment to ethnic identity. Marianismo gender role beliefs differentially related with acculturative stress. Quantity of alcohol use moderated the positive association between time in US and acculturative stress, such that women in the US for less time who drank more alcohol experienced higher levels of acculturative stress than their peers. Findings suggest quantity of alcohol use may exacerbate acculturative stress during some Latina young adult immigrants' initial months in the US.
