Ecomorphological patterns of the fish assemblage from the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, were described and evaluated according to trophic (guilds), spatial (habitats) and phylogenetic (taxonomic distances) structures. The samples were obtained through the Long Term Research Project (LTER-CNPq/UEM/NUPELIA) in August and October 2001. Thirty-five species were analyzed from thirty-one morphological variables. Strong significant correlations (Mantel test) between morphology and trophic guilds and between morphology and taxonomy were found, while morphology and habitat revealed a weak correlation. However, the partial Mantel test showed that the correlations between morphology and trophic guilds persist even when the effect of taxonomy is discounted. The ecomorphological pattern shown by the Principal Component Analysis separated species according to locomotion structures used in feeding. At one extreme there are the piscivores and insectivores that exploit lentic habitats and have compressed bodies and well developed anal fins, while at the other there are detritivores and invertivores that exploit lotic and semi-lotic habitats and have depressed bodies and well developed pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins. Canonical Discriminant Analysis using ecomorphological variables successfully predicted 94.5% of the trophic guild ecomorphotypes, but only 57.1% of the habitat ecomorphotypes. These data indicate that the fish assemblage of the upper Paraná River floodplain is structured ecomorphologically mainly according to trophic structure rather than habitat.
Effect of gonadal maturation on the caloric content and general condition of fish from the upper Paraná river floodplain. Aiming to investigate the energy allocation and the correlation between it and the condition factor (K) of fish from the Upper Paraná River floodplain (22º43'S; 53º2'W), the following species were selected: Serrasalmus marginatus (piscivorous), Loricariichthys platymetopon (detritivorous), Leporinus friderici (omnivorous-herbivorous) and Parauchenipterus galeatus (omnivorous-insectivorous). The collections were carried out in November/2002 and March and September/2003. The muscle samples of individuals from both sexes, belonging to different stages of gonadal maturation had their caloric content determined in a calorimetric pump and the results compared with K. Significant differences were found between the sexes and maturation stages. The detritivorous species was positioned between the omnivor and piscivor regarding the caloric content. Differences among the omnivorous were not identified. The gonadal maturation had an effect on the allocation of energy and K. It was not correlated with the energy stored in the muscles.
ABSTRACT. This work aims to investigate the hypothesis that sedimentary organic matter presents concentration variations in accordance to the size of sediment particles and to proximity with the river's margin. This organic matter is known as a feeding source for benthonic fishes. Sampling of the sediment was carried out in dry and rainy periods, at three Paraná River floodplain subsystems. Three sampling points were established: right margin, center and left margin. The samples (n=88) were submitted to granulometric fractionation (< 70µm; between 70 and 200µm; > 200µm). Low variability in organic matter concentration was observed for samples from the center of the subsystems. Particles, smaller than 70µm, had high variability in organic matter concentration. The rainy period was shown to affect concentration of organic matter adhered to the sediment fractions in transversal section at the sampled environments. With support of literature, the experiment lead to the conclusion that fish species which ingest particles of detritus < 70µm obtain more organic matter of sediment.
