Oncology nurses have been identified as a group at risk for stress. This project aimed at identifying stress-generating situations. There was an attempt at identifying stressful situations through the application of a stress evaluation scale (Stressor Scale for Pediatric Oncology Nursing) (Hinds et al, Cancer Nurs. 1990;13:354-360). In the opinion of 35 oncology nurses, 88.57% of whom were women and 73% of whom had more than 24 months of experience, 38 out of the 50 analyzed statements involving work situations were considered stressful in some way. Fifty-four percent of the statements disclosed a medium or high stressor capacity, and 22% were seen as extremely high stressors. These situations were included in the categories "work organization," "relationships among staff members," and "care restrictions." It is reiterated that the set of activities developed by oncology nurses is stressful, and that there is a need for institutional intervention, due to the narrow relation between work environment and care results.
Gr u p p e II. Gruppe Ill spendet an Gruppe Ill und I. Gruppe 1V.
Objective: to identify the sources of hope for patients in the pre-Transplantation phase of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCT). Methodolgy: descriptive study with qualitative data analysis, carried out at a teaching hospital in the interior of São Paulo State, Brazil, involving patients with onco-hematological diseases awaiting HSCT. After face and content validation, the instrument was applied by one of the authors during the first 24 hours of hospitalization. After the interviews, data categorization and analysis was carried out, using Bardin’s theoretical reference framework. Results: The sample was composed of eight subjects, part (62.5%) of whom did not manage to identify positive aspects of the disease, although they mentioned: solidarity, maturing, humility and approximation with the family. Difficulties included: hospitalization, remaining far from the family and the uncertainty of cure. All subjects identified factors that contributed to them getting depressed. They reported hoping for cure and the desire to get back to their life before the diagnosis. The most encouraging elements they described were: the family (7) and religion (4). Conclusions: Acknowledging these patients’ sources of hope can make it possible to elaborate a differentiated care plan and, consequently, nursing care that can contribute to improve their quality of life during and after treatment.
