It can be concluded that VSC can therefore be considered as potent anticancer agent.

Acetone semicarbazone (a Schiff base) has been synthesized and characterized. Its antineoplastic activity has been studied against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells in Swiss albino mice by monitoring parameters like tumor weight, survival time, tumor cell growth inhibition and haematological characteristics. It was found that the compound at dose 2.0 mg/kg/day i.p (intra peritoneal) significantly decreases tumor weight, increases life span and reduces tumor cell growth rate in comparison to those of EAC bearing mice. The compound also alters the depleted haematological parameters like red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), haemoglobin (Hb) % and differential counts (i.e. lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes) of EAC bearing mice towards normal. The compound enhances the number of macrophages in normal mice. The toxic effects of the compound on the host are not very high and the host recovers gradually towards normal within a few days after treatment. The compound can therefore be considered as a new potent antitumor agent. The efficiency is more or less comparable to that of a standard drug like bleomycin (0.3 mg/kg/day, i.p.).

The antibacterial and antifungal activities of three schiff bases were evaluated against some pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Parallel experiments were also carried out with standard drugs (Kanamycin for bacteria and Nystatin for fungi). Two compounds [N-(1-phenyl-2-hydroxy-2phenylethylidine)-2',4' dinitrophenyl hydrazine, abbreviated as PDH and N-(2-hydroxy benzylidine)-2'-hydroxy imine, abbreviated as HHP] showed significant antimicrobial activities. The rest one [N-(1-phenyl 2-hydroxy-2 phenyl ethylidine) 2'-hydroxy phenyl imine, abbreviated as PHP] showed moderate activity. All these three compounds were found to possess pronounced cytotoxic effect. These compounds can be considered as potent antimicrobial agents.

Methods: Two doses of the test compounds 25 and 50 mg/kg (p.o) for each were selected throughout the research work. The anti-inflammatory activity of the test compounds was determined by 'carragenan induced mice paw edema inhibition' method. The analgesic activity was determined by both, 'acetic acid induced writhing' and 'tail immersion' methods. All such data were compared with standard drugs at the dose of 10 mg/kg (p.o.). Results: Both ASC and BSC have showed positive effects as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of the test compounds at 50 mg/kg (p.o.) were quite comparable to those of standard drugs at 10 mg/kg (p.o.). The pesticidal activities of three Schiff bases namely PDH [N- (1 phenyl 2 hydroxy 2 phenyl ethylidine) 2¢4¢ dinitrophenyl hydrazine], PHP [N(1-phenyl 2 hydroxy -2 phenyl ethylidine) 2¢ hydroxy phenyl imine] and HHP [N (2-hydroxy benzylidine) 2¢ hydroxy phenyl imine] derived from benzoin, salicylaldehyde, 2 aminophenol and 2,4 dinitrophenyl hydrazine  were evaluated against Tribolium castaneum. Probit mortality were studied by surface film treatment method at different doses of the compounds. The results showed that the LD50 values as recorded after 24 hours of treatment were 15.1268, 3.0922 and 3.0922 mg /cm2 for PDH, PHP and HHP, respectively as compared with 0.2416 mg/cm2 for a standard pesticide l-cyhalothrin. With Schiff base complexes of cobalt(II), copper(II) and zinc(II), the LD50 values were 1.5206, 14.8576 and 3.2829 mg/cm2   respectively. Better results were obtained when recorded with longer treatment time.
