This study investigated the relationship between the three DSM-5 categories of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms (irritable mood, defiant behavior, vindictive behavior) and anxiety/depression in girls and boys with conduct problems (CP) while controlling for comorbid child psychopathology at baseline. Data were drawn from an ongoing longitudinal study of 6- to 9-year-old French-Canadian children (N = 276; 40.8 % girls) receiving special educational services for CP at school and followed for 2 years. Using linear regression analysis, the results showed that irritable mood symptoms predicted a higher level of depression and anxiety in girls and boys 2 years later, whereas the behavioral symptoms of ODD (e.g., defiant, vindictive symptoms) were linked to lower depression scores. The contribution of ODD symptoms to these predictions, while statistically significant, remained modest. The usefulness of ODD irritable symptoms as a marker for identifying girls and boys with CP who are more vulnerable to developing internalizing problems is discussed.

With the introduction of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in the DSM-5, the need for short measures of the level of personality functioning has emerged, both for screening purposes and for assessing change during treatment. The Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) was constructed for this and has received support for its two-factor structure and criterion validity. The authors aimed to provide additional construct validity evidence for the LPFS-BF 2.0 by examining its factor structure and measurement invariance across the Dutch, English, French, and Spanish versions and across gender, and its criterion validity. Results showed that the two-factor model had a good fit to the data in the four linguistic versions. Configural and metric invariance were supported across linguistic versions and gender, while scalar invariance was partially supported. Reporting a mental health disorder and having consulted with a mental health professional were associated with higher LPFS-BF 2.0 scores.

Les problèmes de comportement et les problèmes dépressifs surviennent fréquemment en cooccurrence à l’adolescence et entraînent leur lot de conséquences. En se basant sur le modèle de Patterson et Capaldi (1990), la présente étude a pour but de valider le rôle des variables de rejet social (rejet par les pairs, insertion sociale) et des difficultés scolaires, mais aussi des interactions parent-enfant (chaleur, coercition) en tant que médiateurs du lien entre les problèmes de comportement présents à l’enfance et le développement de problèmes dépressifs à l’aube de l’adolescence, et de vérifier si ces liens diffèrent selon le sexe. Au final, l’échantillon est composé de 675 enfants, dont 319 filles, âgés entre 6 et 9 ans initialement et recrutés parce qu’ils présentaient des problèmes de comportement ou différents facteurs de risque des problèmes de comportement. Les résultats montrent que, chez les garçons, c’est particulièrement la qualité de leur insertion sociale qui permet d’expliquer le lien entre la présence de problèmes de comportement et le développement de problèmes dépressifs ultérieurs. Chez les filles, c’est plutôt la qualité des interactions chaleureuse du parent envers elle. Sur le plan des retombées pratiques, les résultats pointent le rôle des relations parentales et de l’insertion sociale dont l’importance varie selon le sexe dans la relation entre les problèmes de comportement et la dépression. Certaines recommandations concernant les pratiques probantes en matière d’intervention auprès des enfants présentant des problèmes de comportement sont formulées.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fifth Edition's (DSM-5) Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) was introduced as a dimensional rating of impairments in self-and interpersonal functioning, and the LPFS-Brief Form (LPFS-BF) was the first published corresponding self-report. The updated LPFS-BF 2.0 has been translated into several languages and international research supports many of the instrument's psychometric properties; however, its measurement invariance has only been evaluated across a few countries. Le FACES IV (Olson, Gorall et Tiesel, 2006) est un instrument de mesure du fonctionnement familial utilisé dans plusieurs milieux de recherche et de pratique au Québec. L’étude a pour but de valider la structure factorielle de la version française du FACES IV et d’examiner sa cohérence interne, sa fidélité test-retest et sa validité concomitante auprès de 123 familles (parents et/ou adolescents) de la population générale et 256 familles recevant des services d’intervention de crise. La structure factorielle de l’outil présente des indices d’ajustement adéquats auprès des parents et des adolescents. Il possède des propriétés psychométriques satisfaisantes et pourrait être utilisé tant auprès d’une population générale que clinique. Toutefois, les résultats invitent à la prudence dans l’utilisation de l’outil auprès des adolescents.

The present study investigated psychometric properties of a French translation of the McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder (MSI-BPD; Zanarini et al., 2003) in a large sample of university students (N = 1,350). A confirmatory factor analysis supported the single-factor structure of the MSI-BPD, and its configural, metric and scalar invariance across gender was established. Internal consistency was high (tetrachoric α = .88; Ω = .88). MSI-BPD scores were significantly correlated to depressive symptoms (r = .57), trauma symptoms (r = .40), negative consequences of substance use (r = .25), and frequency of drug use (r = .11). Finally, 9.5% of the sample reached the clinical cutoff, which is similar to the pooled prevalence for BPD reported in a recent meta-analysis of university students. The present study showed that the French translation of the MSI-BPD is a psychometrically sound screening tool for BPD in both men and women.

The developmental course of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity) from childhood to adolescence was described and compared based on parent and teacher report as a function of co-occurring conduct disorder/oppositional defiant disorder (CD/ODD) over 6 years. The moderating effect of gender was investigated. Participants were 291 children (6–13 years old; 79 girls) with ADHD: 91 with ADHD only and 200 with ADHD+CD/ODD. At study entry, boys and girls in the ADHD+CD/ODD group presented significantly more hyperactivity symptoms based on parent report and more impulsivity symptoms based on teacher report than did those in the ADHD-only group. ADHD symptoms, however, diminished on average over time in both groups, according to both parent and teacher report. However, as children in the ADHD+CD/ODD group, particularly girls, presented more symptoms at study entry, they tended to remain above the diagnostic threshold 6 years later. This suggests an association exists between co-occurring CD/ODD and ADHD persistence.
