Intrageneric relationships in the genus Nicotiana were investigated by comparison of DNA sequences of the matK gene of the chloroplast genome. A total of 40 taxa were examined in this study, representing 39 of the approximately 70 wild species of this genus. We obtained the full sequences of the 1530 bp matK ORFs; no variations in length due to insertions or deletions were found. The phylogenetic trees obtained from maximum parsimony (MP) and neighbour‐joining (NJ) methods were fundamentally consistent. The genus Nicotiana formed a clade in these trees. The traditional classification of this genus was mostly in agreement with the molecular phylogeny. However, all three subgenera and some sections did not form a monophyletic group. Character‐state mappings were used to infer a centre of origin, biogeographic history, and transition of chromosome number. The results support the previous hypothesis that this genus originated in South America and subsequently spread to other continents. The suggestion that the ancestral basic chromosome number is x = 12 and that polyploidy and aneuploidy have occurred independently several times during the evolution of Nicotiana species is also discussed.
We have observed the 8-13 mm spectrum ( ) of the Vega-like star candidate HD 145263 using Subaru/ R ∼ 250 COMICS. The spectrum of HD 145263 shows the broad trapezoidal silicate feature with the shoulders at 9.3 and 11.44 mm, indicating the presence of crystalline silicate grains. This detection implies that crystalline silicate may also be commonly present around Vega-like stars. The 11.44 mm feature is slightly shifted to a longer wavelength compared to the usual 11.2-3 mm crystalline forsterite feature detected toward Herbig Ae/Be stars and T Tauri stars. Although the peak shift due to the effects of the grain size cannot be ruled out, we suggest that Fe-bearing crystalline olivine explains the observed peak wavelength fairly well. Fe-bearing silicates are commonly found in meteorites and most interplanetary dust particles, which originate from planetesimal-like asteroids. According to studies of meteorites, Fe-bearing silicate must have been formed in asteroidal planetesimals, supporting the scenario that dust grains around Vega-like stars are of planetesimal origin, if the observed 11.44 mm peak is due to Fe-bearing silicates.
We present the results of an imaging observation campaign conducted with the Subaru Telescope adaptive optics system (IRCS+AO188) on 28 gravitationally lensed quasars and candidates (23 doubles, 1 quad, 1 possible triple and 3 candidates) from the SDSS Quasar Lens Search. We develop a novel modelling technique that fits analytical and hybrid point spread functions (PSFs), while simultaneously measuring the relative astrometry, photometry, as well as the lens galaxy morphology. We account for systematics by simulating the observed systems using separately observed PSF stars. The measured relative astrometry is comparable with that typically achieved with the Hubble Space Telescope, even after marginalizing over the PSF uncertainty. We model for the first time the quasar host galaxies in 5 systems, without a-priory knowledge of the PSF, and show that their luminosities follow the known correlation with the mass of the supermassive black hole. For each system, we obtain mass models far more accurate than those previously published from low-resolution data, and we show that in our sample of lensing galaxies the observed light profile is more elliptical than the mass, for ellipticity 0.25. We also identify eight doubles for which the sources of external and internal shear are more reliably separated, and should therefore be prioritized in monitoring campaigns aimed at measuring time-delays in order to infer the Hubble constant.
RAVEN will be a Multi-Object Adaptive Optics (MOAO) technology and science demonstrator on the Subaru telescope. The baseline design calls for three natural guide star (NGS) wavefront sensors (WFS) and two science pickoff arms that will patrol a ∼2′ diameter field of regard (FOR). Sky coverage is an important consideration, because RAVEN is both a technical and science demonstrator. Early-stage simulation of RAVEN's performance is critical in establishing that the key science requirement can be met. That is, 30% of the energy of an unresolved pointspread function (PSF) be ensquared within a 140 mas slit using existing WFS camera and deformable mirror (DM) technology. The system was simulated with two independent modeling tools, MAOS and OOMAO, which were in excellent agreement. It was established that RAVEN will be an order 10 × 10 adaptive optics (AO) system by examining the tradeoffs between performance, sky coverage, and WFS field of view. The 30% ensquared-energy (EE) requirement will be met with three NGSs and will exceed 40% if the Subaru Laser Guide Star (LGS) is used onaxis (assuming median image quality). This is also true for NGSs as faint as m R ¼ 14:5.
Various mutations have occurred during evolution among orthologs, genes in different species that diverged from a common ancestral gene by speciation. Here, we report the remarkable deterioration of a characteristic mammalian maternal behavior, pup retrieval, in nonmammalized mice, in which the transcription factor Pou3f2 was replaced with the Xenopus ortholog lacking all of the homopolymeric amino acid repeats of mammalian POU3F2. Most of the pups born to the nonmammalized mice died within days after birth, depending on the dam genotype alone. Quantitative immunohistochemical analysis revealed decreases in the rate-limiting enzymes of dopamine and serotonin synthesis in various brain structures. Similar results were obtained in knock-in mice in which all of the homopolymeric amino acid repeats of mammalian POU3F2 were removed. Pup retrieval behavior in mammals is thus strongly related to monoamine neurotransmitter levels via the acquisition of homopolymeric amino acid repeats during mammalian evolution.
