Coercion is threat of actions which compels the patient to behave in a manner inconsistent with his own wishes. Coercion is inevitable in psychiatric practices. Various coercive techniques are chemical and physical restraints, seclusion and isolation. This chapter deals with various types of coercive interventions. When and how to use coercive techniques and for what duration it is to be used and permitted. It mentions what safety measures to be used in crisis situation and how coercion can be minimised in psychiatric care.
Color is a meaningful constant for sighted people and it’s a powerful psychological tool. Attention is captured subconsciously for color before people can consciously attend to something. Color psychology is the study of hues as a determinant of human behavior. By using color psychology, you can send a positive or negative message, encourage sales, calm a crowd, or make an athlete pump iron harder. Color therapy is also known as chromotherapy, color therapy, colorology or cromatherapy. In this chapter it gives meanings of various colors, what colors means, how do they affect mood and personality of person. It gives an account of what color psychology is, and uses of color psychology in treating illness as well its use in marketing business.
Personality disorder is a common and chronic disorder. Its prevalence is estimated between 10 and 20 percent in the general population, this means that at least one in every five to ten individuals in the community has personality disorder. In general, personality disorders are diagnosed in 40–60 percent of psychiatric patients, making them the most frequent of all psychiatric diagnoses. Personality disorders are a class of mental disorders characterized by enduring maladaptive patterns of behavior, cognition and inner experience, exhibited across many contexts and deviating markedly from those accepted by the individual’s culture. There are many different forms (modalities) of treatment used for personality disorders: Individual psychotherapy has been a mainstay of treatment. There are long-term and short-term (brief) forms; Family therapy including couples therapy; Group therapy for personality dysfunction is probably the second most used; Psychological-education may be used as an addition; Self-help groups may provide resources for personality disorders; Psychiatric medications for treating symptoms of personality dysfunction or co-occurring conditions; Milieu therapy, a kind of group-based residential approach, has a history of use in treating personality disorders, including therapeutic communities.
Philippe Pinel a pioneer, a french psychiatrist, a physician, known as father of modern psychiatry, revolutions psychiatric care of patients with mental illness by introducing concept of moral treatment. Pinel rejected the then prevailing popular notion that mental illness was caused by demonic possession and stated that mental disorders could be caused by a variety of factors including psychological or social stress, congenital conditions, or physiological injury, psychological damage, or heredity. Philippe Pinel for the first time in history of psychiatric patients treated them humanly by unchaining patients known as madmen. This historic event was done for first time in Bicêtre Hospital in 1798 a Parisian insane asylum. In this article a brief history of life and work of pioneer Philippe Pinel is mentioned.
