Contrastive topic is an information structural category that is usually associated with a specific intonation, which tends to be similar across languages (a rising pitch accent). The aim of the present study is to examine whether this also true of Estonian. Three potential prosodic correlates of contrastive topics are examined: marking with a particular pitch accent type, an emphatic realization of the pitch accent, and a following prosodic boundary. With respect to pitch accent types, it is found that only two subjects out of eight distinguish sentences with a contrastive topic from other types of information structure; the contour bears resemblance to contrastive topic intonation in other languages (consisting of an H* accent on the contrastive topic and an HL* accent on the focus), but is not restricted to sentences with contrastive topics. A more consistent correlate turns out to be an emphatic realization of the pitch accent carried by the contrastive topic constituent. No evidence is found of a tendency to produce contrastive topics as separate prosodic phrases.
The focus of the article is on whether emotions could be traced in the temporal structure of Estonian speech. There are two research questions, namely, (a) Do emotions affect speech rate? and (b) What detectable traces, if any, might emotions generate in word prosody? To answer question (a), the articulation rate of emotional utterances was measured and the results were compared with those on neutral speech. The difference revealed was statistically significant. To answer question (b), the relations between emotions and the temporal characteristics of words with a vowel-centered structure were investigated. Sound durations were measured, various duration ratios were computed and various combinations of the characteristics where subjected to statistical analysis. The results revealed a certain difference between the temporal characteristics of Q2 and Q3 feet, and a loss of the difference between the second and third quantity degrees in sad speech.
Artiklis tutvustatakse uurimust, mille eesmärk on selgitada välja lauselõpulist kitsast fookust laiast fookusest eristava emfaatilise primaarse lauserõhu akustilised korrelaadid eesti keeles. Uurimus täiendab varasemat uurimust, milles testiti emfaasi korrelaate piirieelses positsioonis. Uurimuse tulemusena leitakse, et piirieelses positsioonis ebaoluliseks osutunud põhitooniga seotud korrelaadid on mittepiirieelses kontekstis osaliselt olulised. Mõlemas kontekstis on oluline sihtsõna suhteline intensiivsus lauses. Abstract. Heete Sahkai, Meelis Mihkla, and Mari-Liis Kalvik: Emphasis and focus in Estonian. The paper examines the acoustic correlates of the emphatic nuclear accent that differentiates sentence-final narrow focus from broad focus in Estonian. The emphatic accent is also examined in pre-final position, where it is not affected by a prosodic boundary. The study complements a previous study testing the potential correlates of emphasis in pre-boundary context. The results show that F0-related correlates, which are not significant in final position, are partly significant pre-finally. A significant feature in both contexts is the relative intensity of the emphatic word in the clause. The study confirms lengthening as the primary correlate of emphasis and examines its realisation and interaction with the duration relations in the foot, which are the correlates of the Estonian three-way quantity distinction. The lengthening is mostly found either to correspond to the characteristic duration ratio of the quantity degree, or to increase it.Keywords: Estonian, focus, sentence stress, emphasis, duration, fundamental frequency, intensity, the Estonian quantity
The goal of this study was to conduct modelling experiments, the purpose of which was the expression of three basic emotions (joy, sadness and anger) in Estonian parametric text-to-speech synthesis on the basis of both a male and a female voice. For each emotion, three different test models were constructed and presented for evaluation to subjects in perception tests. The test models were based on the basic emotions’ characteristic parameter values that had been determined on the basis of human speech. In synthetic speech, the test subjects most accurately recognized the emotion of sadness, and least accurately the emotion of joy. The results of the test showed that, in the case of the synthesized male voice, the model with enhanced parameter values performed best for all three emotions, whereas in the case of the synthetic female voice, different emotions called for different models: the model with decreased values was the most suitable one for the expression of joy, and the model with enhanced values was the most suitable for the expression of sadness and anger. Logistic regression was applied to the results of the perception tests in order to determine the significance and contribution of each acoustic parameter in the emotion models, and the possible need to adjust the values of the parameters.
Lauserõhu akustilist avaldumist mõjutas ka sõna välde.Märksõnad: eesti keel, intensiivsus kestus, lauserõhk, põhitoon, spektraalne emfaas, vokaali kvaliteet, välde SissejuhatusArtikli eesmärk on uurida, kuidas avalduvad eesti keeles akustiliselt lauserõ-hud ehk prosoodiliste fraaside meetriliselt tugevad positsioonid.
