The article reports research developed in a Psychosocial Care Center for Alcohol and Drugs aimed to know under what circumstances the demand for treatment and the motivations and expectations that involve this process occur. Qualitative research used a semi-structured form in ten interviewees. The results indicated a strong family influence on motivation, both in search and adherence to treatment. Fragile health, violence experienced in their daily lives and the desire for change were also other circumstances indicated as motivation for the search for treatment. The expectations mentioned are related to the desire to abandon drug use and to (re) build relationships with family and work. It is concluded that the circumstances, motivations and expectations evidenced, and that involve the search and permanence in this service, request open doors, commitment to the user's participation and protagonism in care; investments in their autonomy, self-esteem and the recovery of their roles within the family, work and community.
