Um capítulo à parte, na desafiadora jornada de pesquisas relacionadas à outorga de direitos de uso da água (um dos instrumentos de gestão da Lei No 9.433/97), é a definição de critérios para a vazão ecológica, tendo em vista que esta componente representa a integração da gestão de recursos hídricos com a gestão ambiental no quantitativo fluvial, de maneira a preservar o ecossistema aquático ribeirinho. Várias metodologias têm sido desenvolvidas, desde critérios estatísticos, com valor único para todos os meses, até modelos holísticos, que mensuram níveis de habitats conforme variações de vazões. Uma forma alternativa, é considerar diferentes valores da vazão ecológica conforme o regime natural de fluxo, tendo em vista a importância da vida ripária segundo a variabilidade do escoamento no ano hidrológico. A presente pesquisa objetiva-se na delimitação dos pulsos de vazões através de funções lineares, em série histórica diária, que interligam as inflexões da ascensão e recessão de fluxo. A metodologia foi aplicada na série histórica de dados diários da estação fluviométrica Engenho Mato Grosso/PE no período de 01/01/1997 a 31/12/2006. Foram calculados índices de pulsos de vazões (IP) nas escalas diária e mensal, mensurando a proporção da variabilidade da delimitação frente ao escoamento fluvial. No ano 2000, o IP médio foi de 0,1427. O volume de pulsos foi dominante em 6.57% dos dias da série, com o ano 2000 com valores mais expressivos. O IP médio mensal destacou que, os meses de maio a julho apresentaram os maiores valores (em média 0,2172), e menores valores entre os meses de setembro a novembro (em média 0,0737), do ano 2000. A metodologia proposta mostrou-se como importante ferramenta em estudos sobre vazão ecológica, fortalecendo a visão hidrológica do regime de vazões para a confecção do hidrograma ambiental.
