Nachdem unsere Untersuchungenl) das reiche Vorkommen von Oxytriterpensauren in Labiaten ergeben hatten, erhob sich die Frage, welche Aufgabe diese Verbindungen im pflanzlichen Organismus erfullen. Einen Anhaltspunkt hierzu vermittelte unsere Beobachtung, wonach sich Uraol-und Oleanolsaure immer nur in der Kutikula abgelagert finden2). Die Kutikula stellt die BuSerste Membranlamelle dar, welche die Epidermiszellen der meisten Landpflanzen iiberzieht. Sie ist durchschnittlich 0,5 bis 1 p dick, kann aber, z. B. bei Xerophyten, wesentlich starker ausgebildet sein. Die Kutikula baut sich aus dem wachsartigen Cutin auf, das auch die unter der Kutikula gelegenen Zelluloseschichten noch impriigniert. Die chemische Zusammensetzung des Cutins isttrotz seiner weiten Verbreitungbisher nur unzureichend bekannt. Neben Wachsen sind regelmaBig grol3ere Mengen an hoheren Alkoholen und hochmolekularen Paraffinkohlenwasserstoffen enthalten. So wurde z. B. aus vielen Blattwachsen n-Nonacosana)4)6) isoliert, im Luzernenwachs6) fand sich n-Triakontan und in den Erdbeerbaumblattern Hentriakontan und n-Triakontanol?). Die Wachse aus Coniferennadeln beatehen aus l,lZ-Dodecandiol, 1,16-Hexadecandiol und 10-Nonacosanol*). Im Ouricouri-Wachs stellten H . A. Schuette und M . Hanif Khans) die Gegenwart von C24und CS2-Paraffinen fest. Neben Cutin konnen in der Kutikula auch noch Triterpene vorkommen. Nach japanischen Untersuchungenlo) trifft dies fur 120 Pflanzenarten zu, die sich auf 19 versohiedene Pflanzenfamilien verteilen. Die Aufgaben des wachsartigen Vberzuges der Epidermis sind verschiedenster Art. Zuniichst wirkt die Kutikula wasserabstol3end; das Regenwasser flieSt von ihr ab, ohne sie zu benetzedl).
