The objective of this study was to evaluate Maize (Zea mays L.) elite lines currently available in CIMMYT's lowland tropical breeding program in Latin America under multiple abiotic stresses and identify lines with tolerance to drought, N deficiency, and combined heat and drought stress (HTDS). An incomplete line‐by‐tester design was used to evaluate 436 testcrosses under nonstressed conditions, 507 under N deficiency, 417 under drought stress (DS), and 368 under HTDS in 30 season‐by‐location combinations between 2012 and 2015. Elite lines CLRCY016, CML269, CML550, and CML551 performed well across all conditions, while CLQRCWQ118, CLWN306, and CML576 showed good performance under DS and N deficiency. CML574 was tolerant to DS and HTDS. Moreover, CML550 and CML574 are known for their partial tolerance to maize lethal necrosis. Grain yield measured under DS was to some extent predictive of attainable grain yield under N‐deficient conditions (r = 0.65; P < 0.01) and HTDS (r = 0.54; P < 0.01) as indicated by the correlation across treatments. The fact that only a few lines were tolerant across treatments re‐emphasizes the need to separately screen germplasm under each abiotic stress. Based on high best linear unbiased predicted general combining ability (BLUP GCA), it will be possible to develop hybrids tolerant to multiple abiotic stresses without incurring any yield penalty under nonstressed conditions using these inbred lines.
Ileal and faecal digestibility of nutrients was studied on 8 intact and 4 ileorectostomized 45 kg pigs assigned at random according to a replicated 2x2 Latin square design to one of two diets containing either refined sucrose or Jerusalem artichoke tubers (fresh, whole) as the only source of energy. The diets were formulated with soyabean meal to be isonitrogenous. Ileal organic mather (OM) digestibility of Jerusalem artichoke diet was significantly lower (P< 0.001) than of the sucrose diet (48.5 vs 89.1%, respectively). This phenomenon was less pronounced (P<0.05) in faecal OM digestibility in both sources of energy (86.0 vs 95.2%, respectively) indicating decisive participation of the large intestine in the digestion of nutrients of Jerusalem artichoke tubers. The sucrose diet led to higher and lower SCFA concentrations in the ileal and faecal sites (117.5 and 41.3 mmol/100 g DM), while the reverse occurred with the Jerusalem artichoke tubers (21.0 and 117.8 mmol/100 g DM).There was a certain dietary influence in the lactate level in the precaecal part of the alimentary tract of the animals. The experimental data indicate a different site of digestion for both sources of fructose studied and, at the same time, a different extent of digestion of nutrients by the pig.
This time INIFAP has worked in maize plant breeding. The genotypes had specific adaptation to different environmental conditions. The materials were maize double-crossed and Open Pollinated Varieties (OPV). Both varieties were recommended to cover the largest possible areas. The National Seed Producing Enterprise (Productora Nacional de Semillas, PRONASE); was founded in 1961. The Seed Law support PRONASE. Under the new seed law, passed in 1961, several regulatory entities were established to control crop research and seed certification, production and marketing. Officially, all research was controlled by the Ministry of Agriculture. The creation of PRONASE, with its mandate to produce and distribute commercial seed of all varieties developed by INIFAP, created a quasi-monopoly in the seed industry, which limited and delayed the private sector's participation in research and seed production. Eventhough, privatisation substantially changed the public and private sector participation in maize seed production and sale. The Mexican s...
An experiment was conducted with 12 pigs of approximately 25 kg body weight. The animals were alloted to two experimantal groups where the energy source was either maize meal or raw, fresh tubers of Jerusalem artichoke ( Helianthus tuberosus L.). The pattern of feed intake was measured for 4 hours following the supply of the meal to the animals in the morning. It was observed that the time the animals spent eating was shorter (P ^ 0.05) with maize than with Jerusalem artichoke. The rate of eating was significantly different (P^;0.001) in pigs fed maize or Jerusalem artichoke on a fresh weight basis (23.7 or 43.8 g fresh feed/min) but was almost equal on a dry weight basis (21.7 or 18.7 g dry feed/min) and therefore feed intake in both fresh and dry bases was the same for both treatments (1178 or 1142 g DM/pig). We suggest that pigs modify their pattern of feed intake by increasing meal frequency when high amounts of Jerusalem artichoke are offered as raw, fresh tubers, thus tending to keep the level of energy consumption constant.
AbstractThis paper reviews the process that has occurred in Mexico around seed laws, especially the law of seed (2007) and the proposed new Federal Plant Variety Act (LFVV) amending the current (1996), and its relation to the production, trade and supply of seeds in the country. It is related to pressure Mexico to locate legal under the Act 91 of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) to establish a legal framework suitable for seed corporations, with the possible authorization for commercial plantings transgenic maize and if, upon the occurrence of contamination of native maize and improved proprietary national events polluting any normal maize enforce their patent rights and to demand royalty payments. The seed law dictates that all varieties (improved or native) is incorporated in the National Catalogue of Plant Varieties (CNVV) as a prerequisite to enter the qualification process, for which it must rely on the characterization based on the Technical Guide for the Maize Varietal description, complicating management and criminalizes ancient seed maize growers.
