Este artículo analiza una de las vertientes del proceso de expansión inicial de la ciudad de México, ocupándose de la particular dinámica de interacción que desde mediados del siglo xix tuvo lugar con la aparición de los primeros asentamientos “extramuros”, los cuales se establecieron en la cercana periferia urbana, junto a la localización también periférica, de las estaciones del ferrocarril de la ciudad. A través de la exploración del vínculo desarrollado entre estaciones y nuevos asentamientos, se espera no sólo corroborar lo que variadas fuentes han afirmado en relación a que “los ferrocarriles y sus estaciones sirvieron para orientar el crecimiento urbano de la ciudad”, sino también para aclarar que esta relación no fue el resultado de la casualidad, sino que hay razones de fondo que explican tal interacción, las cuales es necesario poner al descubierto para contribuir a una mejor comprensión de los orígenes de la ciudad contemporánea.
